I would pay off the credit cards first, because they are revolving loans. With a student low, take advantage of the good APR.

As a tip if you are trying to buy a house, I would subscribe to equifax score watch on equifax.com for a few months before you buy your house. Most lenders use this score, or a median of three credit bureaus. Equifax has a credit simulator, where they give you a special 1-800 number 24 hrs/day to call. They will tell you exactly how to increase your score, and which is better. It is worth the $7 bucks or so a month.

Definitely the credit cards. The FICO score takes the types of debt you have into account as well as the amounts.

Ms. Unique
I just recently found out this info. Although you didn't give enough information about how many credits cards and how much student loans, I hope this will help you. Add up the grand total of all and compare it with your total income. Make sure you pay all your bills on time and don't go over your credit limit. You should do this for 1 year without any late fees or over the limit fees. Next make sure that the balance on your credit cards is less than half the your credit limit and if you can pay some of your credit cards off, do so but don't close the accounts and don't charge anything on them. The same with your student loans make sure you're not behind in payments. If the interest rate for your credit cards are higher than the interest rate on your student loans, by all means pay the credit cards off first. You also can obtain free information from "Fannie Mae" (u.s. government) on the do's and don't before buying a home. Good Luck!

I would pay off the debt that has the least advantage to you. In other words, if one has a higher interest rate than the other, I would pay it off first. However, if they were the same interest rate or close, I'd pay down the credit card debt, becauase you might have some tax advantages based on your individual circumstance for your student loans. Also, the student loans may be able to be deferred in the event you lose your income, thus giving you more flexibility--its much harder to get a 'break' from credit card companies.

CREDIT CARDS! I doubt your student loans are a revolving interest account like your CC and even if they are, I'm sure the APR is lower....also assuming that you can't borrow any more money on your loans, your CCs will look worse (unless you are already maxed out) because it shows that you could accumulate more debt.

Dump the plastic first! You probably have a much higher interest rate on the cards than the student loan...
