MsBurgundy | Is it common for credit card companies to charge a "foreign transaction fee finance charge"? |
I recently traveled out of the country, and used my credit card several times. On my two most recent statements, I see this foreign transaction fee finance charge. It seems ridiculous that they are charging me to use my credit card outside of the country, even if the currency does need to be converted. Is this a standard practice? Is this charge something that I can have removed? Had I known I'd be charged, I WOULD NOT have used my credit card at all. I do not recall having this fee charged to me on previous international trips. |

Capital One has some credit cards that don't charge foreign transaction fees. This is the only credit card company that I am aware of.

That's right, kid. It costs them money to convert US currency to another! Next time buy travelers checks! |

converting currency COSTS money-the cc company isn't going to absorb that cost |

The banks here charge if you use something other then their ATM's to get cash. Credit Card Companies are probably following suit, |

Yes, common practice...and if you use it anywhere in the US at an ATM that is not associated with your Credit Card bank, they also charge a fee. |

Its standard. On the plus side you usually get the best exchange rate this way.
I generally pull out as much as possible from an ATM and don't use the card for individual transactions. Drive the % you give them down a bit. |

certain credit card companies do. |

Some cards (banks) charge a fee, others do not. You can complain to the company that you think it is unreasonable but in future, you need to check and ask them before you travel. If you can dig out old statements, you can challenge them to produce the notification of a new charge, otherwise you should not have to pay |

Very common - I take care of Bank of America's here at work and they get them on there. It's about the same as you using your atm card at a bank other than yours and they charge a transaction fee. |

"Had I known I'd be charged"
You did know, you just weren't AWARE because you didn't bother to read the terms & conditions that you had to acknowledge that you read when you applied for the card. Or read the inserts in your statement that the credit card company is required to send when they make any changes to the terms & conditions.
So what is "ridiculous" is to be mad about these fees and mad at the credit card company for doing exactly what they said they would do which you would have known if you bothered to read the terms you agreed to. |
