No, it is not illegal. Most banks and other financial institutions ask for a ssn when applying for credit. However,some will accept other ids instead of a social security card. But, that depends on each company's own policies. |

There is no other way for a company to decide weather or not to give someone credit unless they run a credit check, in order to do that you must have the SNN and other personal information. If the company can not see your credit history then they don't know if you pay your bills on time or not, or if you have more bills than your income can support. It is not like you went looking for her, she came to you...she sounds a little out of touch with reality!!! |

Getting the ssn is necessary to run a background check. The women in question may have been confused by other things she has heard. For instance, if you get a call from a company (supposedly one you do business with) you should not give out any personal information, especially if you did not initiate the call yourself. There are many scams out there so extra vigilance is required. If, as you say she contacted your company (not the other way around) than she should expect that she will be giving out personal information. |

they have to have the social security number in order to pull your credit report which will determine wether you are approved for the loan/credit card, etc. So to answer the question no it is not illegal, that person is crazy. |

I don't think so, because you need it to verify their credit. How else can you check? there are a lot of people that share the same name, so that wouldn't be an accurate system, to just go by name. I am pretty sure she is wrong. But to be safe, speak to supervisors at your work, just to be sure. |

No it is not illegal to ask for a SSN on a credit application. However, it is entirely possible to run a credit check without a SSN -- it's easier with the SSN.
It is perfectly legal for someone to refuse to provide their SSN for a credit application. Technically, you only have to provide your SSN for use in processing social security and income tax. |
