You're living in the government's land, you're breathing the government's air. Yes. |

just pay your damn bills and you won't have to worry! |

I don't think so but they will never go away if you don't pay them then you will be turned into collections then be served papers for court on the unpaid bills and so on and so forth...... Plus it really messes up your credit.... |

It's not criminal, but it is a civil matter. You can and will be sued. |
|

What a bunch of terrible answers. It is a civil matter to not pay your bills. Which means you are taken to court for monetary reasons. NOT CRIMINAL ONES.
Being behind on bills IS NOT STEALING!
Unless of course this involves fraud... thats a criminal matter. |

It's not illegal but they can take you to court. But they cannot always collect on everyone. For instance, if a single mother owes several thousand on a credit card and they sue her because she doesn't pay, they cannot take any action to collect, even after they win the case. But for most people, once they sue you and win they can garnish your wages, set liens, ect.
Also, most debt is a civil matter (not criminal). If you are bouncing checks then you more than likely can go to jail. |

Only if there is fraud involved. Otherwise it is a civil matter, not a criminal matter. |

no, but you will get in a lot of trouble. |

Uh, yes.
Its stealing. You are using services or buying things with money that is borrowed, and needs to be paid for or paid back |
|

Well, technically no. But you could go to jail in the long run.
Your account will go to a collection agency. Then if the balance is high enough, they may take you to court and you might go to jail.
They may even start a class action suit against you.
We all pay our bills, what makes you any better than us? |
|

D
 |
Yes what type of question is that? You don't pay, they sue you and get the money plus you're left with a bad credit rating. |
|

Why do you think it isn't?
If you committed to paying bills (having a cell phone, electricity in your apartment, payments on your car loan) then you are obligated BY LAW to pay those bills-or you can be charged in various ways for THEFT.
Might be theft by deception, theft of services, different methods in different states...but NOT paying bills IS illegal! |

Not illegal per say, but it can ruin your credit score/history, cause your electricity/water/et cetera to shut off, and lead to severe legal ramifications, if neglected for too long. |

Yes it is. You agreed to purchase merchandise or service, in return for money.
It means you have breached your contract, and your word is nothing more than a piece of crap. |

Illegal? (Assuming you are not talking about paying your taxes) Considering that debtor's prison has long since been eradicated...no. If it was then there would be a possibility of jail time or immediate government intervention. (Current credit card and loan companies are the real criminals. The rates they charge were once reserved for the mafia's loan sharks) But the problem is they have a legal right to take everything away from you.
If it was illegal than bankruptcy would not be an option. If it was illegal the current trend of "walking away" and allowing foreclosure would be impossible and not an openly marketable business venture. So technically it is not illegal and it is not stealing (assuming that you didn't intend to not make good on debt, if your intentions were to default than you are on a slippery slope as to wheter or not fraud was commited) But what it is is stupid, and if you are trying to pull something over on someone else than it is immoral. |

that's what credit is for. Otherwise you lose privelidges; like getting your electricity turned off and you probably won't be able to get it back if they see it as you doing it on purpose. |

No, but it's not wise. It will effect your ability to obtain credit (a much needed commodity in todays marketplace) for years to come but you will not go to jail. Don't get me wrong, you will be imprisoned but it wont be in a physical prison, it will be a financial prison, which will take at least 7 years minimum to be pardoned from, sometimes longer.
It is however illegal to not file your tax returns. The IRS will not put you in jail for not paying your taxes. But, they'll put you in jail in a heartbeat for not filing your returns.
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS file your returns, even if you cannot pay your tax right away. They will set up a payment plan with you, if needed.
Hope this helps. |

i dont think so
theyll just shut off w.e you had to pay

It is not criminal except for taxes. You won´t go to jail for not paying your electricity bill, but the company will stop providing you electricity :) But it is illegal. The court can rule against you and you can lose all your property and be bankrupt. If you plan to move living in a park, that´s fine. |

Um. Yes. It's a legal contract you've made to pay your bills. |

its illegal once you aren't giving the ppl who need that money.
just think if you were the guy who works for edison. then ppl dont pay the electric bill, then you have no money.
JUST PAY YOUR BILLS! |
|

"Alexander."

Of course it is illegal because you have to pay for a service that has been provided to you. If you really owe a lot by now. I'd recommend you to go to Canada or Mexico.
Good luck. |
