Is it legal for credit card companies to increase interest to 34.9%?
queried why payments were increased and was told interest rate was increased by 10%.

If you are in the USA, Yes.

Read the fine print - it's all in there. You must have missed a payment - or maybe they delayed posting a credit so that you 'missed'. In other countries such behaviour can be illegal.

You run the very real risk of never paying off your card with all this going on.

Looks like it's time to change cards.

Others keep saying change cards and go 0% interest and my bet is that the increase is do to poor credit habits and if that is ture then you will not get a nice card with reasonable rates.

If one pays off the bill every month then the rate is not all that important.

When you called and they said the interest rate increased then why did you not follow up with, WHY?

wendyek
When you applied for the Credit Card you may have been given a lower interest rate as a special opening offer.

34.9% seems very high, there are plenty of other Credit Cards with special offers transfer your balance to a card offering 0%.

When you enter a credit arrangement you should be aware of the terms under which changes can be made. Yes. A credit card company can change the interest rate charged and it will tell you this in the terms and conditions.

Yes as long as that is in the instructions that you received or they send you mail noting changes. it happens when you are late on bills even though it may not be with your own credit card company.

Yes. By using their card you have agree to their terms and conditions so in theory they can do as they please

Very often you start on a low rate, and then it's increased.

That is a huge amounge to go up to but it is probably in the small print somewhere.

Prenn
Yes, that is the default rate. As much as we don't like higher interest rate, depends on the credit card company, if you're late twice in the 12 months billing cycle, they can raise the rate to a default rate usually 32.24%.

Read their terms and conditions.

Yes they can, but they dont raise it that high without reason, usually a rate that high is due to default by the customer, such as....

late payment, (it only takes 1)

or going over you spending limit
