It is legal for unpaid medical bills to go on ur credit report. The credit bureau can display it in ur credit report but they can only classify it. The cannot give any info as to what kind of medical bill it is. I was a divorced mother of two who could not afford medical insurance and was making to much money to qualify for medical aide (medicaid). So medical bills really stacked up on me...and they are all on my credit report. They dont count as bad as lets say a bankruptcy or past due credit card but it does count. The only way it will come off is if u dispute it and the original creditor can not provide evidence that the account is actually accurate. They have 30 days to do this. If they fail to provide that information to the credit bureau then it will be taken off. Get in touch with the credit bureaus and see what they tell u, but more than likely they will tell u the same thing. Good luck!!

It is legal for medical delinquencies and medical carge-offs to be reported to the credit bureaus. However, some banks, especially smaller community bank, do not lend any weight on them when considering the extension of credit. It is really up to the loan committee of the bank or the individual loan officer.

They are legal but you can combat this a few ways. First, if you had insurance that should have paid then contact them. If you didn't have insurance or they would not cover you then you can always ask the medical provider for a payment plan. If that isn't possible then some offices offer financial assistance to those who qualify with their income and their debt.

I am sorry but it is legal. We ran into the same problem when we were buying our house in 1999. However, they are supposed to show that the bills are medical and they are NOT supposed to be used against you. If you really need help, contact the government agency that covers fair credit reporting. You should be able to find their number but doing a google search under federal government agencies. Another source would be a credit counselling agency in your area. They are normally a good source of information as well.
Good luck

did you ever think about paying for your medical bills
you can't get them off your report without paying as with all other bills

See an attorney. A friend of mine owes thousands in medical bills and her credit rating is just fine.

sway_ii
I am sure it is just like any other bill, they can send it to collections if you dont pay and that will reflect on your credit.

Medical facility's do not report directly to credit company's but if you are turned over to a collection agency that will go on your credit report

Yes it is legal. But what you must do is call and either make arrangements or let the hospital know that you are INDIGENT. Most hospitals have programs to forgive you of your hospital bills if you prove you are unable to pay. Call and find out. If the bills are from the past 60 days...see if you can apply for Medicaid and have them pay for them.

Or you can wait for them all to post and file bankruptcy----not recommended. This is a last resort. Best advice call and see what is going on and act for itemized billing....a lot of hospitals misbill and this alone could reduce the debt if you question procedures and medicines given.
