Is it legal for stores to refuse my credit/debit if I do not have my id?
My credit card is signed with my name and DOES NOT say See I.D. on the back.
Additional Details
I am NOT asking what you think....Or if you think it is right or not... but the proper procedure....

Merchants who accept Visa or Mastercard are not supposed to ask for I.D.

However, they can ask for I.D., you can refuse, and then they have to proceed with the sale. If they don't, contact the card's issuer (not the bank, the company) and report the merchant.

That being said, I would suggest you DO put "ask for I.D." on the card. It's for your own protection. Although you'll be surprised at the amount of merchants who don't see the warning.

It is probably more so illegal for a store to accept a credit card WITHOUT checking ID.

yes.... and you kinda should be glad that some one does check.... my cards say see id, and they don't.... anyone really could easily take your card and use it at gas stations, stores, etc...... but maybe it's good they do it randomly or more people will find other decietful ways to be theives...... sorry..... but any store has a right not to sell to you as long as its not against any law.... or againts your age (unless u buying something u should not), race, religion, gender etc...

kack318

yes they can refuse it....it is store policy to see the persons i.d. because we need to make sure that it is really you and your not using some random credit card that wont get paid

Irish1952
Without ID, there is no way to prove that you are the person to whom the card belongs. Would you want someone else to be able to use your credit card without identification? I don't think so.

woodlands127
Yes, it's legal and it's for your own protection! You'd be glad stores ask for id if you've ever had your card or identity stolen.

worldstiti

yes they may request id to prove identity

donp
The proper procedure is to chech whether the name on the card matches the name on the ID. The Store also must make sure that the ID is genuine - that it is not fake and that the picture on the ID matches with your face and that your signature matches the signature on the ID.

This is the only way to make sure that the credit card that is being used is not stolen. You must be happy that such precautions are being taken. No credit card says 'See ID'. It is the duty of the Store to check the ID.

Absolutely. Having a signature doesn't mean anything unless they can verify it against a photo id. This is for your protection as well as the store's protection. Too many people sue stores because their stolen card was used there.

Yes, they have every right to refuse. Without any identification you may be a fraud risk. In other words, you have to prove you are who you say you are, or they might think you have a stolen credit card.

jstrain5676@sbcglobal.net
if the store does not know who you are, then yes they have the right to refuse your credit card, or if you look suspicious they have the right to refuse your credit card without proper ID

fire4511
Stores can have any policy that they want. If a transaction is proven to be fraudulent, the store loses the money. Many retailers have suffered large losses, and now are doing more to protect themselves!

You are not required to shop there, they are not required to accept any payment other than cash!

it is legal cause my uncle owns a store...it's just precaution..

Yes it is. And, in the days of identity theft, aren't you GLAD they're looking out for you????

It's for your own safety... Thank them for it. Would you like your signed credit card to be stolen and used because cashiers allowed the schmuck who stole it to use it without an ID? Trust me, it's for your own protection.
