Ivan K. | Is it neccessary for an adult to have a credit card? Isn't a debit card already enough? |
Someone asked how to keep financial stability and many people agreed that she should get away from credit cards. |

It’s not necessary, but it’s one of the easiest ways to build a credit history, which is vital for being able to obtain financing for expensive items like homes and cars, to be able to rent a place to live, rent a car (you can sometimes but not always use a debit card for this), and in some cases, to get a job because employers want to see strong credit histories.
Debit cards don’t build credit. They don’t provide any protection for a buyer. If you incur a fraudulent purchase on a credit card, you can easily dispute that change and get your money back – it’s not so simple with a debit card and you may recover nothing.
Also, if you have to use a card for a deposit on something like a rental car, for example, with a debit card that deposit is immediately withdrawn from your account so you can’t use that money; with a credit card the company simply runs an authorization to ensure you have that much credit, but doesn’t actually charge the card, leaving your whole LOC free.
Credit cards are only bad if you spend more on them than you can pay off each month. |

I dont use debit cards because I dont feel comfortable giving direct links to my bank account, and some places actually charge per transaction. |

Credit cards are perfectly fine if you don't miss a payment.
Credit cards are like IOUs and you paying them off shows that you're financial responsible. Debit cards just drains money away from your account. |

Personally, I don't use a debit card. I don't like giving everyone direct access to my bank account. Way too many instances of excess 'holds' or duplicate transactions screwing up your bank account.
Credit cards are a tool. I use mine for almost everything and then pay them in full each month. Mine have cash rewards. So they are paying me to use their money.
Problem with credit cards is folks spend more than they can afford and run up big balances. That's poor financial management. These same folks tend to be the ones who use a debit card excessively and overdraft their bank accounts. |

really, why are so many people anti credit card? credit cards are not the evil thing, it lack of personal responsibility. i may be a little weird for not carrying around large amounts of cash with me but I'm OK with that.
having a credit card and using it responsibly helps you build credit. not so with the debit card. and that credit history will come in handy when you want to buy more expensive stuff that can't be covered by a debt card.....like a house or a car.
I'm not going to tell you that you HAVE to have one but i do think it is a good idea.
it is not credit cards that ruin college students, it is the lack of personal responsibility that make college students and credit cards a bad combination |

It's a fact of life that credit cards are neccessary. Yes, I know there are a legion of mindless Dave Ramsey fans around here, but what they don't realize is that the "no credit approach" will always cost more in the long run.
Get yourself some credit cards, use them wisely and build your credit history. |

Credit cards can be convenient, and there are some things that it may be difficult or impossible to do without one (such as rent a car), but, no, strictly speaking it is not necessary. I'm sure there are plenty of people who manage to live without them. |

A debit card is enough. A credit card is not necessary.
Credit cards are good if you have the self control to take the bait but not fall into the trap. The bait is up to about 30 days interest free credit. The trap is the huge interest that follows that period if you do not pay the full outstanding balance when you get the bill.
So only use a credit card if you are sure you can pay the full bill when you get it and ignore the 'minimum payment' offer. |

A debit card doesn't establish or affect your credit history. Credit card and installment loans do. So no debit is not enough. So if you ever apply for a car loan, mortgage, et.c.. in the future you won't have any credit history because the lender won't know what you did with your debit card other than spend....because there's no history of repayment and that's what you need to prove. |

Its not necessary at all. You can build credit with secured loans like car loans.

Well credit cards are helpful when your trying to build your credit it best just to apply for them but NOT actually use them. |

How about no credit cards at all and work cash only? I have seen this work very well. And if your woman can't handle that, leave her. You may be better off. |
