Is it possible for someone who has just gone through bankruptcy to receive a new credit card?
My mother-in-law is 89 and has just filed for bankruptcy due to $37,000 of credit card debt incurred over many years by her son...primary caretaker. I am concerned that he enjoyed "getting away" with running
up her cards and not having to pay them off...that he might try it again.
Concerned daughter-in-law (of the other son)

Should I freeze her credit with the three agencies so that no more credit cards can be opened?
She is completely clueless as to her finances. Her income from social security and a pension provide her with $2200/month which is ample...no house, rent or car payments and no medical expenses...so just utilities and food IF MY BROTHER-IN-LAW doesn't take out cash to buy stuff for himself.

I would think it would be possible, but probably only a secured credit card for people who are trying to rebuild credit after a bankruptcy. Since secured credit cards require a deposit, I would think its probably not likely she would open it herself, but if your BIL has power-of-attorney or is willing to commit fraud, then he might be able to open it.

If you're concerned that your BIL will run up more debt under your MIL's name, you probably should freeze her credit... but I guessing you would need power-of-attorney for that.

What does an 89 year old want a credit card for?
A prepaid card might help?

Stop the credit and keep the B-I-L away from all info. Have it sent to you and/or a PO Box. Have all bills paid electronically.

Her credit is really bad now. And i would not let that woman NEAR a credit card. Shes 89, what the hell does she need?

yes they will come from everywhere with high interest offers dept stores and everything else gas cards

Toy
she will get "A Lot" of different offers, even offers from the people she put under bankruptcy but "IGNORE" !!!
Don't Do It!! when the mail comes for c/c, loans and other different offers just put "rtn to sender" on envelope & put it back n mail. this will eliminate offers constanly comming in the mail.

Hope this helps!!

Technically, yes, she could get another credit card, but it would have to be a secured one, meaning you would need to put a deposit down to cover whatever the credit limit is (IE: IF the credit limit is $500, you would need to put down a $500 deposit).

Personally, I don't see any reason that a person at age 89 would need a credit card anyways, especially if she has $2,200/month coming in. $2,200 isn't liek she's rich, but given her age and I would assume lack of a social life, that should be more than enough for her to live off of.

i would go to the agencies and freeze her accounts or make it so only certain people can deal with the accounts, thats a sucky situation!

partytime!!!
why not?

PJ
I hope not. Put a hold on her credit. Contact the major credit reporting agencies - TransUnion or Experian will help you. Try calling 1-800-680-7289 or log on to transunion.

Yes, freeze her credit.

I wouldn't be surprised if she gets a number of credit card offers, as it will be quite a while before she's eligible to file for bankruptcy again. (This assumes she's finished going through the process; if it's ongoing, then no, she wouldn't be able to get more unsecured credit)

SmartA$$
Its still possible, but usually you can only get a secured credit card. This means you have to deposit money into a savings account before you can get a card. If you want a $500 limit, you have to put $500 in the account, etc. Then if you don't make your payment, they take the money out of that savings account to pay the bill.

We Survive
i dnt think its possible...not now..not with this economy. banks r becoming more and more stricter with credit cards..they're only letting certain ppl have it.
