Is it possible to ask for a "credit decrease" on my credit card?
My credit card has a $500 limit, but I'd rather have it at around $300 so I'm not tempted to spend the whole $500. If I ask them to make my credit limit 300 instead of 500... can they do that??

I am sure that they would.

Very simple, just call the credit card company and explain the scenario to them and it should be taken care of over the phone.

Of course it is possible. But if you have so little self control, why not just cut up the credit card and pay cash for everything. That way you will only spend money when you have it. A credit card is a great convenience if you use it right. Using it right means not spending more than you can pay at the end of each month. That way you avoid the high interest charges and you don't have to carry a lot of money with you. The unfortunate thing about credit cards is that people use it to borrow money, and eventually get to the point where they can never pay off the spent amounts.

Try to develop some control over your money instead of having your money control you. The discipline you develop will serve you for the rest of your life.

most certainly you can request it. Do not be surprised if they ask that you make your request in writing.

Yes, most give you the option but try not to "advertise" it. Give your lender a call and they will help you

Yes. When I was in college, Discover sent me a card with a $2,000 limit. I had them decrease it to $1,000 with just a phone call.

Yes, they can reduce your credit card limit. Companies are more than willing to do this as they want their customers to manage their credit wisely as well. One thing to consider is that your credit rating is based on how much credit you have (plus a lot of other things) vs. how much available credit. The more available credit you have available can help you increase your credit score somewhat. Of course, making the minimum payments ON TIME is more important. It is better to practice self control and keep the higher credit. If you don't think you can do this, it is better to lower the credit limit.

YES it is. When my daughter was having some financial problems and needed a credit card I took one of my Bank of America cards and had the limit dropped from $3000 on it to $300 and added her name to it. When I explained to BofA why I needed to drop the credit line, they were more than happy to oblige.

You can, but it will do you more harm than good. Decreasing your credit line makes it look like you owe more than you actually do. A good rule of thumb is that you shouldn't use more than 30% of your available credit. So if your limit is $500, then you should be using no more than $150. If you're using more than that, chances are you may need to slow down a bit.

Yes, you can request a credit decrease.

However, this might be counter productive. You are trying to build UP your credit rating. Asking for the decrease certainly will not help your rating. It may not hurt but it won't help.

Without self control of your credit spending you will end up in trouble. Don't become a "crediholic". Just put your credit card in your dresser drawer until you have paid off your balance. Then take it out again. Rinse and repeat. You will soon have a habit of paying off your card each month.

Yes you could, but you also hurt your credit because you have much less "available credit" in your portfolio. If you want a lower fico score you should ask for it
