I would say that using your credit card online is as safe as using it in a shop. As long as you trust the website then it should be safe. I only use Amazon, play.com and HMV and I have never had problems before. Sometimes if you are buying a dvd the senders accidentally send 2 so thats an added bonus. You can also find voucher codes for certain online shopping sites which give you money off. Also if you're not sure you can read reviews for the site on other review websites and these will tell you which sites to trust. |

It's safer to use a credit card for any purchases. You have greater ability to dispute charges in case of fraud by using a credit card.
If you use a debit card monitor your checking account balance regularly. If someone steals your debit card they can empty your checking account. Some banks offer protection for debit cards. Talk to your bank and read the fine print in agreements. |

Yes and No. First, the know. Never enter your personal account number (PAN) into the browser space. There are too many risks involved...malware, keylogging, etc. It is safe to use a debit or credit card online if, and only if, you swipe your card information via a personal card swiper whereby your card's magnetic stripe info (which includes your PAN and your PIN) is processed "outside the browser space." Specifically, take a look at the post on December 31st, 2008 regarding the risks involved with ecommerce transactions done in a browser space.

It's fine as long as you stick to using well known trusted online spots such as Amazon / Paypal / Walmart / Boots.com / overclockers.co.uk / newegg / mullarkeys.co.uk / cabelas.com, etc + also use proper security precautions on your computer such as a fully updated Mozilla Firefox browser, and have anti-virus / anti-spyware + a firewall installed (and run regular scans + updates).

Also, before making a transaction, check your browser's address bar to make sure the URL starts with "https://" instead of ordinary "http://" + there should also be a padlock icon displaying at the bottom of your browser indicating all is secure & safe.

If the site doesn't display the "https://" + the padlock, leave the site and shop online elsewhere on the basis that if they can't be bothered to provide adequate security on their website, you can't be bothered to shop there.

Make sure the website is trusted and a secure website. If it is listed as an SSL website, or a secured retailer, than it is just as safe as using a debit card in a store.
Just be mindful of non trust-worthy websites. |
