hello
Is it smart to get a credit card when i turn 18?!?
im 17 now, and im thinking of getting a credit card to buy alot of stuff i want, plus of course college supplies etc.

what do you think??

quizzard123
If you think this is a good way to buy stuff you don't have money to pay for, it is a VERY bad idea.

Getting a credit card as early as possible is a great idea, but only if you plan on paying off the total amount every month, to avoid interest charges.

Mind you, you aren't going to be offered anything other than a secured (call it pre-paid) credit card at 18 anyway.

Yes, only to an extent and that is to build your credit up, but only use it wisely and pay it off each month.

First of all, it would help if you had a job to pay for the things you want to buy. If you default immediately, it will be on your credit files for 7 years.

Frankly, when I read your motivation I thought it was the worst idea in the world.

To buy things, you need ... money. Not credit.

You may be confused and think the two are the same.
It is sad that you are 17 years old and do not know the difference.
Money = stuff you can exchange for goods and services.
Credit = a way of big companies to turn your greed into their profit.

I've just read in the Parade Magazine today that there is a bill going through Congress to make the minimum age for getting a credit card 21. Good Luck and don't be like me and get over your head in debt.

I would get a credit card with a low credit limit (i.e $500-1,000). It will be easier to maintain and it can help build your credit over time. I just turned 18 also, and I got a student credit card. Just make sure your use it responsibly and ALWAYS PAY YOUR BALANCE OFF! If you don't have the money to pay it off within a month..then I just wouldn't charge it! By the time we graduate college, it will be no problem to apply for home loans, exc because of excellent credit standing. Good luck

repair and/or build your credit

Find out everything you can about repairing your credit if you plan on buying a lot of stuff because if you cant pay, you shouldnt play.

but on that note: it is good to establish credit. A secured card with a low limit is best, not only to build credit but to show you responsibility.

well it depends if your responcible and youll pay it off. but if you arnt responcible then screw it.

xomanda22
i prefer a debit card. but if you dont want a debit card or you already have one, yes you should get a credit card.
