rysmlz | Is it true that bad credit scores can keep you from gettting a job? |
There's a credit score commercial and they said that bad credit scores keeps you from getting a job. What in the world? That's like discrimination of some sort. How do you improve your credit score if you don't have the mean to improve your credit score? |

It's not the score so much as what makes up the score.
What potential employers are looking for are things like public records, collections, judgments, bankruptcy's, tax liens, child support, evictions, law suits and of course they also look at your pay history to see it you pay your bills on time.
All of this tells them if your a responsible person or not.
And to answer your question yes your credit can keep you from being hired at some jobs especially those that require people to handle money or requires a security clearance.
It also makes a difference in what people pay for their vehicle insurance, the worse the score the higher the premium. |

yes, the jobs you are applying for may ask to check your credit. |

Some. I'm in banking and most banks will pull a credit report before hire. I guess they look at it as, if you have bad credit you're more apt to steel. Silly I know |

Yes. It can be used to determine your decision making capability, your level of responsibility and if you might be a security risk (if you handle money or finance)...The only way to improve your score is to pay off bad debts...it will take some time, unfortunately. |

Actually, in some jobs, yes. Most of the time banks check your credit. The assumption is that if you mismanage your money, owe many people, or have filed bankruptcy, then you are not responsible enough to be around large sums of money. Discrimination? Not really. It is the same thing If you were irresponsible in your work habits at another job and they found out and did not hire you. |

Some jobs, yes. |

yes, especially in accounting or jobs that require a corporate credit card. |

yes, it is true, but it depends on the job. It just shows how well you make decisions. How to improve your credit score is a tricky question. First of all, what is your current credit score? Or do you not have any credit at all? Or have you missed payments or let bills go deliquent? |
|

Yes. Some companies do it, others don't. If your good at what you do, they won't care. You can't improve your score right now, but you can get your credit report and make some calls. Don't bother with anything over 7 years old. Don't let a TV commercial scare you into giving them money. |

Definitely! If you apply for anything relating to money (working in a bank, investment bank, etc.), they will absolutely check your credit score and if it's not good, you might not be hired. They would be concerned about someone with financial troubles possibly stealing. |

some jobs (especially governmental or clearance jobs) will not hire you with horrible credit. the feeling is that you will be more easily coerced into selling secrets or confidential and or classified information. it's not discimination because it's stated in the application process. |

Yes it is true. And while it seems like discrimination, having bad credit is NOT a protected class, so it isn't. |
|

Doctor Deth
|
I've heard that, but have never heard of any actual employer checking credit references |

Cugador

Yeah, a bad credit score shows a lack of responsibility and dependability. Also, if you're in a job that requires you to handle money, having a lot of dept may lead you to steal. |

in certain call centres yes |

Depends how bad your credit score is.
If it's bad as a criminal, there are some risk factors and less job oppertunities for you not just in jobs but many other life oppertunities.
Some jobs are strict but it really depends were you working. |
|

Gee, Really?
 |
Yes, but you have to give the employer permission to check it. It rarely happens though, and that's more of a scare tactic than anything to get you to use Free Credit Report's services. |

YES, it honestly can. But that's for a real upscale type of job. |
