Jeff | Is it true that credit cards were rare 30 years ago? |
Were credit cards as common in the past as they are today?
If not, how was anyone able to buy anything?
Looking on the boards, there's a lot of 16-20 year olds looking to "build credit". |

I'm only 37, but I still don't remember noticing credit cards as commonplace in the 70's or early 80's. At least my family didn't have one then (I got my first credit card in '90 I believe). I believe that borrowed money came straight from the bank most of the time in those days. But, don't take my word for it...I was pretty young. |

30 years ago there were department store credit cards, like Sears, or Penney's. Visa and MasterCard were just starting. So was American Express, Discover didn't come along for about 15 more years.. People wrote checks for their purchases, or paid cash, or had a line of credit with a local merchant. Things were much more friendly and trusting then. |

they were not rare the just were not as common as they are now. there were different ways to get credit back then plus people didn't always but things they couldn't afford |

30 years ago people had credit cards. They were not rare. Not as many places accepted credit cards as do now. Many department stores only accepted their own credit cards.
However, if you go back another 10 years, there were very few major credit cards like Visa or Mastercard. They were not easy to get and the credit lines were only $300. It was difficult to get that increased.
People used cash and wrote checks. It was much harder to live beyond your means. |

really it goes to show you how times has change back then most everyone used very little credit, banks was the most used form of credit besides your local business and then it was more for the wealthy, Montgomery ward, JC Pennys, Sears was some of the first big business that gave out credit. Even credit cards such as mastercard, american express and visa was not as easily to retained to everyone in the 70 and 80's around the 90's it became easy for just about everyone to receive some form of a credit card. I think that credit cards are a downfall to alot of what is going on in society now the foreclosure problems, people are being forced into bankruptcy because of credit card debt mainly and being sued and wages garnished. |

Electronic cards weren't even cared about until a snow storm closed banks and people had to use the newly invented ATM machines. |

Yes. People carried little debt. |

If I recall... I'm 52...
Credit cards started in the early 1950's after WWII. I think American Express was one of the first....
They slowly spread during the 1960's. They boomed in the 1970's untill they were common.
In the 80's and 90's they reached a saturation point, so that almost everyone had at least 1 and sometimes up to 5 of them. |

It's true. Credit cards came about in the gluttunous 80's when inflation was rising. People bought stuff by OH MY GOSH!!! SAVING UP FOR IT!!! WHAT A CONCEPT YOU SAVE THE MONEY BEFORE YOU BUY! |

maybe not the late 80's.. but in the early 80's, only the wealthy and businessmen had credit cards.. it was fairly cumbersome too since there weren't magnetic card readers in most places and they had to make an indentation of (press) your card. |

Mastercard and Visa did not exist 40 years ago. Each individual store had their own credit cards. Many did not charge interest unless you missed a payment. People saved for the things they wanted to purchase and used credit rarely. You would use your credit card only for unplanned expenses; i.e. the refrigerator broke or your tire needed replacing. Even 20 years ago people paid off their credit cards every month. Long term debt was and still should be, only for home mortgages or car loans. |

Very true.
Years ago, people established local credit with stores in their neighborhoods. There was no internet. |
