Is it true that your family is responsible for your debt when you die?.?

Your estate will pay off your debts. So in a round about way, yes! Your family will pay it. It will be subtracted from someone's inheritance.

Well, I'm not an estate lawyer (or any kind of lawyer!) but I believe your family is NOT responsible for your debt, but your estate is. So, anything you own at the time you die will be liquidated to pay off any debts before anyone inherits anything. Depending on your situation, you might want to check into Trusts.

No, they are not responsible unless they have cosigned on the debt. For example, if I were to die today, my dad would be responsible for my school loans b/c he cosigned. However, if they are not cosigned, you estate is responsible for paying your debt. If your estate is liquid enough to cover your debt then good, but if not then those you owe just eat the loss.

BJ's answer sounds the best, however three years after my father died the IRS tried to collect from me for him. I told them where he was planted and good luck.

You are only responsible for the debt you put your name on. Your family may have to liquidate your left over assets to pay off your debt but they do not owe anything.

NONAME
No. Not unless they jointly signed for a debt.

The estate will sell the assets to pay creditors. Anything left over is inheritance. Anything unpaid just dies with the person.

As I understand it, it depends...if you are a minor or dependant, yes to your legal guardian.
If on a joint or co-signed liability, those will fall to your partner in the debt. It will be collectable in full & simply 'their 1/2'
Otherwise, debts will be taken from your estate.
Collection attorneys can have your estate liquidated to pay them...ie.sell your car, home, etc.

If you have nothing, then there are not responislbe.
