mb20and151 | Is it wise for me to get another credit card? |
I'm a 23 year old college student. I currently have one card with a limit of $3000 and a balance of about $500 (which I am paying $100 every month to pay off). My aunt mentioned that I might want to get a second card. Additional Details Don't worry about me getting into debt. I'm very responsible. My balance on the current card was from paying for summer school and books. I think my aunt said it as more of a "to improve your overall credit" type of a thing. That's what I'm really asking. |

Maybe you should get another card and be very responsible with it. I recommend this only if you can afford it. I had one credit card for 6 years with no late payments (paid balance in full monthly) and I was denied credit left and right due to lack of credit history. That's when I was told I needed another one to establish better history.
There is always a catch 22 with these kinds of things. Your damned if you do, damned if you don't. Just do not use over 20% of your available credit, and make sure you pay them timely. Lots of people say shred credit cards- this is true if you abuse them and have accrued a lot of debt. If you need to establish your credit, you can't do it by avoiding credit. So be resonsible and make sure there are no excessive fees on your new card. Try capital one or Citi credit cards.
Just saying, in the future, it may help you to get another card. You aunt was not 100% right, but she was not wrong either. I would wait until you finish school for another one. You seem to have plenty of credit with the one you have.
Good Luck |

By adding cards to your credit file, and keeping the cards in good standing, you would be building a good credit history which will help you in many ways.
Good credit will help you receive lower interest rates when you apply for a mortgage, car loan or other types of loans, get you lower insurance rates, help you land your future job, etc., etc., etc.
Listen to your aunt, she gave you good advice. |

What was the impetus for your Aunt to give you this advice? She may be telling you that to establish more credit which could be beneficial for getting loans later in life. I encourage you to do some more research about managing credit and credit cards before you apply. www.mybank.com/creditcards has some very useful information about managing credit. Hope this helps. |

It is wise only if you use credit cards properly. You are not doing so with the card you have. To carry a balance on a credit card is the worst kind of debt to have.
It is good that your card balance is low relative to the credit limit. You should not charge on the card more than about 20 percent of the credit limit. Maxing out a card is bad for your credit rating.
Getting another credit card can show that you have credit available, which is in your favor. It also helps when a firm takes one type of card but not another. However, you should use a credit card as a debit card. That means never charge more than you can pay in full when the bill is due. In effect, you get free credit while your money in the bank earns interest for a month. |

NO! Shred your current card and get a debit card. A debit card can do everything a credit card can do except land you in debt. Debit cards force you to think more about your purchases because you need to have the money in the bank in order for it work. With a credit card, you can just swipe away until you are broke and in serious debt. |

If you are talking about a general credit card like MasterCard, Visa, Discover, one is enough. Most businesses take them all, even if they issue one of their own. |

credit cards are bad news. They will suck the life outta you. Use a debit card instead and you will not get into debt. |

Don't worry about getting into debt? Your already in debt.
It's Easy isn't it?!
Everytime you use a credit card your in debt. If an emergency happens and you can pay it off at the end of the month You get behind. Once you get behind in the credit card game its hard to get out of the game. High interest rates and outrageous late and over the limit fees.
Pay as you go. Live on less than you make and you will have money. |
