You are correct in the fact that Visa is universally accepted, especially since even most debit cards carry the Visa logo. But a Master Card is basically the same thing so there is no reason to get one.
A lot of places don't take AMEX. Everytime a purchase is made the business has to pay a percentage of the sale to the card issuer. AMEX charges way more so many businesses don't have it because they realize most people have both.
Amex is especially good though for travel...... not in just getting deals but in overseas usage. Yes you can use a Visa in an overseas ATM. But AMEX operates currency exchange centers everywhere and as a card holder you get a better rate. If you lost your card you could replace it faster and nomatter where you are in the world finding a bank that can't handle Amex is nigh impossible.
So first of all to build great credit it is a good idea to have two different ones. Plus AMEX tracks how long you have been a member so as the years go along it will be easier to move up to the gold or platinum cards which give you acsess to even better deals. That is why most people carry an amex and a visa.
Whatever you do stay away from the store cards. They are a ripoff.

No. Good combo to have is a Visa/MasterCard and Discover Card.
I've gone to establishments that accepts multiple credit cards that include Visa/MC, Discover Card and AmEx, or if a business JUST accepts ONE credit card, it's usually just Visa/MC or just Discover Card.
I have never come across a business that just takes AmEx.

Mastercard is accepted almost everywhere. Amex is widely accepted as well but not as much because it costs the merchants more money to accept it.
ozzy chik...
they are accepted here...and...welcome !!

Mostly - Mastercard your best bet.
American express probably not accepted at your local quik-i-mart though.

While Visa and Mastercard are usually accepted everywhere, most small businesses won't accept American Express. While all credit cards charge their merchants for accepting their cards, American Express charges a higher fee to their merchants, so most small businesses don't find it worth it to accept the card.

i'm in customer service and take credit card numbers over the phone all the time. MASTERCARD is usually accepted everywhere.. yet AMERICAN EXPRESS does not have the usual 16 digit account numbers and therefore can't be keyed in as well due to they only have 15 digits.
