Is one credit card enough?
I have two credit cards, my first card had a limit of $1000 which I got while in college. Today after five years they have raised the limit to exactly $10000. The second, American Express Gold, which I don't use at all, but just to keep it active I have linked it to my cell bill. Even though the AMEX card is not the oldest, I am afraid of canceling it because I think it will lower my credit score! My credit card balances do not exceed more than $200/month.

Should I cancel my AMEX Gold card? I think that one credit card is enough. If I charged to the limit they have given me, I would be in a financial nightmare! I have never had problems with Bank of America and they seem to raise my credit line every 6 months, so why bother with another card? So is one card enough to built credit? I really don't want to keep two cards and pay $100+ in membership fee!

Thank you all for taking the time and submitting your responses, I have read them all. Let me elaborate more. Some of you said that more than one cards are needed to establish good credit (at least 3). If someone has three cards with with $5000 each, and another individual has a single card with $15,000 then doesn't both of these individual have the same credit worthiness? Isn't having a single card the same as 3 the other individual has? Thus I ask isn't one card the same as three?

Since they have given me $10000 in five years I have no need for another card. I don't spend more than 200 per month on credit and I carry a balance once in a blue moon to keep the card company happy! I don't like plastic.

My first card does not have a fee, I got it while I was a freshmen in college. Within a year and a half AMEX started sending me offers, and since I was too dumb I picked the gold card, the funny thing is there is not an atom of atomic # 79 in the card! I guess I'll keep it for now.

there are so many cards that have no fee, keep looking. one is enough, and you should try and pay cash most of the time. for your own safety lower the credit limit. do you really need 10,000 limit ?

Never live beyond your means! credit cards as well as other debts invite you to live beyond your means. A credit card may be ok for small convenient purchases, but you should be able to pay off the debt at the end of the month. I don't have a credit card I use my debit card and make sure that I don't spend more than I earn. You should also save money and never touch. When you say I don't have any money it could be that you have 10,000 saved, but that is not spending money. The less debt you have the better. Don't put yourself in compromising situations that would lead you to that kind of bondage. Ultimately the choice is yours. It can be a very costly one. Chosse well and wisely.

Canceling the card will cause a blip on your credit score but will not cause long term problems. If your getting ready to make a major purchase in the next few months, you may want to wait to cancel the card, otherwise drop it. You can build you score with the single card and avoid the potential problems of running up a high balance.

You'll probably want to get rid of the card with the membership fee (unless it happens to pay you offsetting rewards for your spending pattern). The best strategy for using credit cards is to avoid all interest and earn as much rewards as possible for your normal spending (i.e. what you'd normally buy because you need it and have the cash to pay for it). To do that, you simply pay your balance in full every month and funnel all/most of your normal spending through your credit card(s).

Since you've likely got great credit, you should definitely look into using a good rewards credit card. To quickly see which rewards card will pay you the most rewards (e.g. cash back) for your normal spending profile, you can use this rewards calculator:
http://www.creditcardtuneup.com/

Regarding your question about whether one card is enough, it's enough to build your credit. However, having more than one rewards credit card and using each to its strengths can translate into more earnings. That rewards calculator mentioned above will do a multi-card analysis and tell you how much more you could earn in rewards by managing a 2nd card, a 3rd card, etc. Then you can decide whether it's worth it to manage the extra card(s).

No. One credit card is not enough. To have a good mix of revolving and installment loans and achieve the maximum score and profile for your credit you need 3-credit card accounts all with good long pay history's and 2-installment loans also with good long pay history's.

Just because you have the credit doe's not mean that you have to max it out. You should use it for every day purchases like gas and food being careful never to exceed 30% of your limit in any given month and then pay them off in full before the due dates.

This will show that you are responsible and know how to manage your credit and money.

By limiting yourself to one credit card you are going to run into problems when you try and finance a vehicle or a home because you will have what's called limited credit or a shallow file as some people call it.

Feeling Mutual
AMEX usually has an annual fee, I would cancel it.

Spifi and Studly are correct. You really never want to cancel cards, even if you're not using them, as it would not only lower your available credit, but shorten your payment history which makes up 35% of your score.

What backs up my point is Step 7 on the link I posted below

If your concern is with your credit scores.....you have been doing is perfect!

The reason they are raising your credit limits is because you have been doing everything right and they want your business. As your credit scores go up, so do your credit limits.

Here is my suggestion. If you are paying an annual fee for a credit card, call them up and demand that they remove it. If they don't, then I would cancel it (you are referring to your AMEX card, right?)

But note that if you want a really good credit score, you need 3-5 sources of credit. That means 2-3 cards, maybe a car loan or some other secured loan.

If you are getting nervous about the $10k credit limit, and don't think you can control your spending, then by all means call and get them to lower it. But this is not how you will get a great credit score. You many not care about it now...but when you go searching for a mortgage it could make a huge differance.
