The rate is per year, however they divide that up by month. And by the way, the interest compounds, so pay as much off at the end off the month as you can. |

Neither.
The "APR" is the total amount charged in a whole year, but they charge approximately 1/12 of it each month 12 times a year; they do not charge it all at the same time. |

it's usually quoted by the year but then you divide that by 12 and that's the percentage amount they will be charging you per month. |

The rate that's quoted is an Annual Percentage Rate. However, interest is charged every month. So to calculate your interest charge each month, divide the rate by 12.
If you owe $1000 on your credit card, and the APR is 24%, your interest charge is 1000 x 24% / 12 = $20. |

Annual Percentage Rate is what APR means so it is expressed as a yearly rate, however interest is charged continuously and shows up every month on your statement. To find the monthly rate divide the APR by 12. |

APR is the annual percentage rate. The APR is divided by 12 to get the monthly rate which is used to calculate the monthly interest charge.
If you pay your balance in full, you don't pay any interest. If you carry balances, the interest is calculated by multiply the monthly interest rate times the average daily balance (total of each day's balance divided by the number of days). |
