Is there a difference between credit cards and debit cards?
I want to purchase something online and all i have is a debit card. So i was just wondering if there is a difference. If i were to fill in the particulars of my debit card when they ask for the particulars of a credit card, will the transaction go through?

If your debit card has a Visa or MasterCard logo on it, you can enter the card information as if it were an actual credit card and the transaction will go through.

If it doesn't have a logo, you may need to choose the Debit Card option when you're entering your card info.
If there is no Debit Card option, you can try entering the card information anyway (it won't hurt anything to try), but chances are that you'll need a credit card or a debit card with a logo.

Some Additional Info:
================

When you use a debit card, money is pulled from your checking account to pay for whatever you're using the card on.

When you use a credit card, you borrow money from a creditor (like Visa, MasterCard, etc.) to pay for whatever you're using the card on.

Debit cards are worth whatever amount of money you have in your checking account.

Credit cards aren't worth anything.
They're just permission slips to borrow money from someone else.

These days, most people just use credit cards because using a credit card can help build a person's credit score, while, unfortunately, using a debit card cannot.
So, they just use their credit card, which borrows money to cover the purchase, then they quickly pay back the borrowed money so that they don't get charged a fee for borrowing.

People also get credit cards because they can be used to borrow money to help in many emergency situations.

A debit card uses money you have and a credit card uses money you don't have.

a debit card is linked to your checking account. For places that accept credit cards a debit card that is soley a debit card wont work. however some debit cards that have a visa logo(or other) are debit/credit cards that can be used in those situations.

::: ThE DiFFeReNcE beTwEen CrEdiT & DeBiT :::

CREDiT: Every time you use a credit card, you are actually borrowing money that is made available to you by a bank or other financial institution. The institution pays the debt to the vendor, and in turn, you pay the money back to the institution. By signing up for a credit card, you agree to pay back the money that you borrowed, in addition to any interest drawn on the amount you borrowed.

DEBiT: Odds are, you have a debit card in your wallet or purse right now, since many ATM cards are programmed to have debit options. Issued by your bank, debit cards take funds directly from the money that you have in your bank account--in a sense acting like a check, just faster. With a debit card, you don't have to carry cash or checks, and it is very convenient to shop at a variety of places including gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, and retail stores. They provide instant access to your money and are accepted worldwide.

Debit cards are used like credit cards, meaning that the store you are shopping at 'swipes' them, and then you sign off on the receipt. You don't have to show a picture ID, and there is usually no PIN number for you to punch in.

umm, about filling in ur debit card info instead of credit - im not sure about, i dont own either...

hope this helped! gudd luck with ur card/s...

The only difference is that a debit card takes the money directly from your bank account and a credit card is borrowing money from the credit company you have the card with. As long as your debit card/check card has a major credit logo on it, most companies will accept it. Some places online give an option to accept debt cards, separate from credit cards. And some companies only accept certain credit cards, not all. You just have to read the payment options from whereever you are trying to purchase items, and see what they will accept.

the main difference is that credit cards are more like a loan of money whereas debit cards take their money directly from your bank account. Like a credit card could have a limit of like 1,000 and you do not need all of that money at once. With a debit card you would need that money.

Yes, it should go through just fine, if it's a visa or mastercard.

The difference is that with a debit card, you already have money in your account, and when you charge something, it draws the money directly from your account. With a credit card, you're borrowing the money on each charge, and you pay them back when they send you the bill. Either way, if it has a visa or mastercard logo on it, the store can just charge it the same way.

Steve
As long as your debit card has a visa / mastercard etc on it then your fine..

credit cards = using borrowed money

debit cards = using money from your checking account

credit cards are money you dont have that you pay off later. debit cards are money that comes from your personal account

Usually if you have a visa logo on your debit card, then the card can be used where ever credit cards are.

Debit cards just take away money from your checking account, and credit cards bill you and you pay the minimum amount each month :)

CREDIT CARD: the money you use are not yours! it's belong to the credit card provider. In the end of each month you must pay them back. you can buy as much as you want.

DEBIT CARD: you use your money. you send your money straight to the credit card provider and they will use it to make payment.

you cannot buy anything which costs higher than the money you send to them.

Sgt. Pepper
If your debit card has a logo on it , Visa Matercard,etc.... you can also use it as a credit card.
