Is there a problem if you max out your credit cards, but pay the balance in full when you get the bill?
Does this still hurt your credit scores?

The Colonel's Girl
I wouldn't think it would hurt your credit scores. My husband and I have 2 credit cards that we have been paying off for the last year and our score has gone up since then because we pay ontime and always a little bit more than we're suppose to. I think the credit score also goes off of like your debt/income ratio. Meaning if you have a house and a ton of bills and credit cards but don't make much, that hurts your score. Whereas you can max them out and pay them in the same month there shouldn't be a problem.

it good that u r paying off on time, but i would be more interested on how you pay card that has a steady balance. what if the well runs dry and you can only pay the min or little over, that is something i would like to see. since u pay off the bill each moth, then my question is what type of card do u have Amex, if not then u need that instead revolving credit.

It can look bad if you keep a high balance, but it should not do much to your score ( if anything). What you will see if you check your credit in a few months is that during the reporting period for that card is a line that reads " high balance" and then it will show a dollar amount and then the next line will be current balance and if that is low or 0, that is what affects your score the most and is also what potential creditors look at. I hope this helps some.

Only one problem.... if your Credit Card Company decides out of the blue to lower your card limit and you go over it thinking that
you are still within your limit then they will charge you overdraft fee and of course will immediately raise your interest rate...

I have seen it happen even to people that pay off their card
every month. So better check and make sure that your card
limit hasn't been lowered before you run it up every month.

If you have maxed the credit cards out, providing they are paid off by the due date you will be fine. If you want to pay off & close any of them you'll need to check with your financial institution if there is any interest owing too. You will need to give them a date & ask for a closing balance, as the interest is calculated daily in most instances.

If you continue to pay the debts on or by the due dates you ok as it shows the financial institutions you are responsible, which is good for your credit rating. But what can affect it is the amount of credit cards you have together with anything purchased on a "buy now - pay later scheme", as you are increasing the risk. Good luck. This is speaking from an Australian perspective & you may need to check things out closer to home.

The problem is not if it would hurt your credit scores.

The problem is that you likely will not be able to pay the debt if you maxed out the cards.

Then there is hell to pay because you sink into that never ending spiral of paying ungodly amounts of money to cover the interest. That's why they love it when people max out. They make more money when the suckers don't pay up.

Here is something to watch out for. I paid my Discover card online. Next month I saw I had a $40 late fee. I called Discover and they told me I paid ONE DAY before the billing cycle began again. Did you get the spelling of that credit card? Just in case it is DISCOVER. Is that in big enough letters?

As long as you paid them off in full it would help your credit score. It's when you don't pay the bill that hurtsd your credit.
