SunshineApple | Is there a reason for this if so what? |
Hi,
I am trying to apply for a credit card and so far I have been refused!
I am 25 and work full time and rent a flat with my boyfriend. I did have some debt problems but got a debt consolidation loan and am now in credit and paying off this loan each month.
I was told when I got my debt consolidation loan with my bank that I wouldn't be able to get a loan or credit card with THEM for 12 months.
However I have tried Tesco, +More (Marks and Spencers) and Sainsbury's and each one been refused.
I don't want a high credit card - 500 would do, even less just to give me enough to have a Christmas this year and treat my family.
They said no based on their credit scoring but no more info than that.
Why was I refused and how can I change their minds or is there anywhere you reccomend that may help me into getting a credit card?
Thanks
Lx Additional Details Hi,
I got a debt consilidation loan with my bank and paid off all the loan and so on.
I understand I can't just get a credit card just for christmas and already work full time and have a baby on way so guess I back out to work a second job to get more xmas money.
Thanks again. |

Your bank letting you get a credit card with them after 12 months is good, and better than you`ll do elsewhere.
Credit problems stay on your report for 6 years, although now so many people are in debt only the first 1 - 3 years are usually looked at, unless you had a lot of debt problems on your file.
Your bank will give you a card faster than anyone else, as they can see you spending habits, and incomings and outgoings each month, so they can make a more informed decision.
You aren't going to get a normal credit card yet unfortunately!
However, there are companies who can help you with bad credit, the only catch is the interest rates are high.
Try Capital One first, they are most likely to give you a card. If not then try Aqua, and then Vanquis in that order. All offer cards for bad credit and the order above is the order in which you`ll most likely to be accepted.
However, the problem you may find is that you should only apply for a maximum of 3 or so sources of credit in the space of 6 months. If you try more it looks like you are desparate for money, and consequently unlikely to be able to pay it back. Making more applications will actually LOWER your credit score.
You need to wait for a bit before you try again.

If you had defaults on your accounts before you paid them off they stay on your credit rating for six years. Do you really want to get into the same situation again?! |

I agree with Mr Ed. Going into debt to provide christmas for everyone else is not sensible especially as you have just paid everything off and have a loan. What you can do is limit yourself to a certain amount say £5 for each person and pick something really fun for them. It doesn't have to be useful just be creative and the recipients will laugh and enjoy the effort you made. We did this one year and it was quite good fun. Christmas is about being together with family and friends not about ostentatious presents etc. |

first of all it is nice to give Xmas for everyone but not if you have to go in debt to do it --- give everyone a big hug and work real hard all next year and get your credit back and also pay cash for next year Xmas!!! |

You haven't cleared the debt record yet. You don't say what your debt-to-earnings ratio is, but based on your history and your current state of finances, I suspect the lenders are merely being prudent. What you WANT is not the determiner of what other people should give you. Take a second job to get the money for your Christmas spending. |

As you have honestly mentioned, you have credit problems in the past. I congratulate you for managing to sort this out by consolidating your debts into one loan.
The thing is when you apply for credit, organisations view your credit report and see that you have had problems in the past and that you've had some late payments. (I'm assuming this is the case before you consolidated). The fact that you've had problems before doesn't make it any easier.
Late payments actually show up to 36 months before and if a creditor has issued a default on you then this would even be harder.
What I suggest is that you check out other credit providers with lower acceptance criteria and hope for the best. |

its common for banks and loan providers to all share details, infact if you look at the people who run store cards, by far and large they are all run by GE money which means if they see you are someone at risk to lend to, its really damaged our borrowing future.
The best thing I can recommend is to borrow jointly or under someone elses name, when its proven you can borrow and pay back successfully, things should be easier. |

Unfortunately every application is recorded on your credit file and will lower your score, so you are less and less likely to be accepted. |

To find out why you can't get a credit card you need to check out your credit rating with Experian or Equifax. For £2 they will send you full details of your credit history. |

Did you pay off the full value of your loan in debt consolidation, or did you apply to have a portion of your loan paid by the government?
If you did, then you're unlikely to get credit again for some time. There are loans that include an application for a reduction of loans that you cannot afford to pay, and then the total repayable amount is reduced, with the government effectively paying the balance. It's one step down from bankruptcy. The big problem is that a lot of debt consolidation companies include this service almost 'underhandedly'.
If you chose to apply to have your loan reduced - in theory to about half - by saying that it was more than you could pay, you'll be credit-blacklisted with the credit scoring agencies.
If you're not sure, you can apply to have a full copy of your credit history provided by a bank or building society, all of whom should provide information about getting your credit score for about £3. They'll probably give you a form you need to fill in and post off, but there may be online versions by now.
Some of the information that comes back will be difficult to interpret, but you can always take it into your bank, and ask them to explain anything on there.
If there is information on there that should not be, you can appeal against it. |

Go mto the website below. I realise that you are in the UK ( I used to live on that side of the pond!) but I would have to believe that the tips in this site would still be available to help you repair your credit and you should still be able to challenge your credit score!
I'm not sure how scoring is done in the UK now, but if the 3 major credit bureaus here in the US are also operating in the UK, I have to believe they use the same kind of scoring system there that these yanks do here!
Fair Issac or also known as FICO.
This site is worth reading and get the RSS feed since new information is being added and updated.
I got my credit score from 480 to 709 in one year with the help I got from this site! |
