I am trying to build my credit back up after some stupid things I did as a 20 year old. I had some deliquent credit payments about 5 years ago or so, that I eventually paid off in full about 4 years ago. I now have a low level credit car, along with my monthly car payment, and I know the late payment history from years ago is prohibiting my credit score from rising beyond the low 600's. I've heard you can write to the credit card company and ask them to remove this information, but I get the feeling it may be fruitless. Any help will be appreciated. |

Yes, there is a way. It's called credit repair. I am a credit repair specialist and I do it for a living. I fix people's credit on a daily basis. You can do it free and legal. I promise I'm not trying to sell you anything.
Anyone who answered otherwise, needs to please stop spreading misinformation, because it can be very hurtful to people in your situation.

It could not hurt to write the creditors involved and ask for forgiveness. I've done this a couple of times and it worked once with Bank of America. Explain your story to them and remind them that you did the right thing and paid the account in full. I would send the letters to the CEO of the company. He won't actually see the letter but it might make it into the hands of a sympathetic executive assistant that knows how to get things done. If nothing comes of it all you are out is some of your time and a few stamps.
You might also dispute the charge-offs with each credit bureau.The credit bureaus will have to verify the accounts with the original creditors. Being that the charge offs are so old the poor schmuck that is tasked with following up on them might get lazy and not respond. Or, maybe the creditor has changed computer systems and they can't find your old account information. You never know. It won't hurt to try!

You can attempt a hardship letter, but they are usually more effective sooner than later. If you're going to try this, do this before trying the next step.
You can attempt to dispute negative entries on the credit report...if the entry can't be verified in 30 days, it is to be deleted. You can make multiple attempts at the same entry, but dispute for different reasons, otherwise the dispute will be tagged as frivolous and discarded. An entry that is removed because the creditor failed to respond in time can still reappear if it is later verified.
If not removed through generosity of the creditor or your dispute, the entries will remain for seven years from the date of last payment. As time goes by, the impact the negative items have on your score will lessen as long as you continue building a positive history.
You may also consider adding another credit card...keep the balance below 30%, continue making on time (in full if possible) payments, and your score will slowly rise. |

It is true you can't remove real negative history. Anyone who tells you differently is trying to sell you a bill of goods. The items, however must be updated in concurrence with the fact they were paid. Write all 3 credit bureaus and tell them what is incorrect if anything and request research into any account you feel is wrong. Make sure all accounts are updated with the right info.. I had some very bad things like judgments and chargeoffs only 2 years ago and my credit is in the low 700's. There may be some erroneous info on your credit. When you write the credit bureaus, they must send you a copy of the info they have. Look over it carefully. Good luck... also, any late payments fall off after 3 years typically. Collections only affect you the day they happen. judgments 7 years, bankruptcy 10 yrs. |
