Is there a way to stop my family from ruining my credit?
I was born into the wrong family. I am the only person who is financialy mature and responsible. I am 21, have financed my own $22,000 car, have my own place and a nice job. My mom is very unstable. ( I dont know my dad.) When I was about 15, she needed to get a house, but her credit is so0o0o0o horrible that she put the phone and electric in my name b/c she had outstanding bills in her name. Like usual, she left that house without paying anything off, and there is a $200 phone bill and a $500 electric bill unpaid after 6 years. These things are on my credit report reflecting negatively and it's hurting me b/c i am looking to move and put these things in my own name. Is there anything i can do?

Dispute it with the credit bureau and the collection agencies (if they are handling the unpaid bills) by providing a birth certificate showing you were the age of MINORITY when these accounts were opened. That is, you were under 18 years old.

According to businss law, a minor can NOT enter into a legally binding contract and as such, these amounts should be removed unless the utilities can prove that you were in fact, over 18 years old at the time these debts were incurred.

Good luck.

Fight it thru the credit reporting agencies they can not leave it on there if you were 15. You may just want to say the bills are not yours and not mention that your mother did this She may get into lots of trouble for using your ss#. takes about 30 days but you can get them removed from your credit. If that does not work just wait a year. Negative credit only stays on your credit report for 7 years

After you explain things to the phone company and the electric company, face the fact that you'll probably have to pay something to them.... it's not really enough money to go to court over if you have to pay a lawyer.

Then.... DO NOT EVER, EVER, EVER let anyone use your name and SS# for anything EVER. If you learn that someone has used your name to apply for credit, go immediately to the creditor and get it cleared up.

The 3 major credit companies give you some space for rebuttal, explanation, etc. on your credit report. But they will not like what they see. You keep doing it over and over again for your MOM, she is the problem. You cannot transfer the bills if you signed,
you owe! Don't do it again !

I think the utility companies should have to prove to you that those are your bills. In fact, what I would do is make an appointment to go talk to them. Take your birth certificate. Ask them how the bills could be yours when you were only 15. I would think they would have to take it out of your name.

I'd ask Suze Orman on her show if you're up for it. . .

Just pay those bills off, and don't let your family get in on your credit anymore.

First of all putting utilities in your name at 15 is illegal. You need to contact Equifax, Transunion and Experian. They are the 3 credit bureaus they all have a process to resolve these issues. Just let them know what happened. Also for 30.00$ you can go to TrueCredit.com and obtain a copy of all 3 of these reports with information on how to contact them. Good luck!

If you think your family will CONTINUE to use your name and SSN, and since you can prove that they've done it when you were a minor, you should apply for a new SSN - and of course never let anyone know that you have a new SSN.

It is rare and may take awhile, but if your family continues to use your info - - it'll be a lifetime of financial hell for you.

Also, after six years of NO activity you don't owe the bad debt anyway......but I wouldn't ask to have it removed - I'd leave it to support your request for a new SSN.

If you don't do something - at the very least - a fraud alert - years after you've purchased a home, you could find a lien filed against it because of something new your mother has done in your name. Don't let that happen.

Families are the WORST offenders of identity theft.

My first thought is to let this ride for another year, then these reports will drop off your report automatically.

If you report this, they could prosecute your mom for using your name illegally to obtain utilities.
