Is there people trying to scam me?
Well during the end of summer last year I had somebody call me saying I owed on a best buy account which I do not have. I finally called & had that fixed so nothing more from them. But this afternoon I had somebody call me about my "mastercard" account something about I owe them so much money but thing is I do not have a credit card PERIOD, I do not care to have one & I don't have a debit card or even much money in my bank account. Thing is the people calling me asking for this money I have NEVER gotten a bill from so are there people trying to scam me out of money or somebody just giving them my name trying to get money from me, I know there can be people calling from 800 numbers that aren't "official" can somebody help me with what could be going on?

dragonfire
they are phishing for info
it's a scam
they want your personal info
NEVER give out any info
call screen EVERY call
it's cheaper to get caller ID with anon call block
than to actually pick up the phone and unknowingly talk to a scam artist

it also good with caller id to actually check the number in the logs with http://whocalled.us/

Here is the deal it could be a scam. But there is a good chance you are actually a victim of id theft. Best bet I can tell you is to pull your credit reports and have a look see. That will enlighten you. If your report is clean then someone is trying to scam. If not then you have a long road to repair to deal with.
for your free report go here.

if it is id theft then go to
ftc.gov for help

I really hope it is not an id theft case. I know first hand how hard it can be to recover. I was a victim once and still am. I am now 5 years into fixing it and several thousands of dollars. I hate to say it but id theft is really the fastest growing crime out there and the victims have to pay for it.

Sounds like you are a victim of identitiy theft. Go to your bank and have them pull acredit report for you and then go through it with them. If someone has opened up lines of credit using your id they will show up on the report.

You need to check your credit reports, free, online. You can do this once a year. See if these accounts show up on your reports. If they do, you may be a victim of identity theft. That's a mess to clean up.

Ask the collectors for all the pertinent information on the account, without giving them the correct answer. Get the correct spelling of your full name, correct address and telephone number, and correct SSN. If they do not have these correct, the debt is likely not yours. Sometimes names are close enough that mistakes are made.

experian.com
equifax.com
transunion.com
for your credit reports.

It could be a scam, or it could be even worse. That is the first sign that your identity has been stolen and used to obtain credit in your name. Check your credit report immediately and notify the bureaus if you find any incorrect information on them.

ive heard of this happening to people, so i wouldnt believe them, verify that u dont have an account by calling up mastercard and asking. the people r probably just after ur personal info so they can rob u or something.

peilthetraveler
Congradulations! You are the victim of identiy fraud. Better check your credit score and look up the various websites on what to do.

It could be a wide variety of things. For starters it could be a case of id theft or it could be a scam. Do these people claim to be from a collection agency? If so then tell them politely not to call you anymore and to put it in writing. I would very seriously have a look at your credit report. you can do that for free at
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp
If something is going on with your credit you may need to file a fraud alert. On each of the credit bureaus websites you can initiate this. It is only temporary though. You will need to follow through with the ftc (ftc.gov) and submit an id theft affidavit. Also you will need to file a police report. If per chance someone did steal your identity you may have a hard time getting your report as information may not match. A simple thing to do is to go to your bank and explain that you may have been a victim of id theft and would like to apply for credit to see what is going on. A lot of banks are very good about helping customers as id theft is the highest crime out there right now.
I hope that is not the case for you but if it is you are welcome to email me and I can provide you with a lot of other resources for help and advise. I deal with credit professionally for a living.
Whatever you do do not have lengthy conversations with collections or give any information to them. Debt collectors are your worst enemy. Please give them no info at all. Do not verify anything to them. If you have to hang up.
Good luck and I pray for the best.

Step 1: Check your credit report.
Step 2: See if you can place what's called a freeze on your report. This is where someone needs your signature/written permission to access your report (this may delay getting a job or getting a loan or CC, though... but that way it's a LOT harder to steal your identity).
Step 3: If fraud (no MasterCard inquiries on your report or lists of cards in your name), contact your local authorities (police) with the 1-800 number these people were using to call you. If someone DID open an account in your name, contact the credit card company and local authorities.
