Is this even POSSIBLE?
for this month, I only have $19 charged to my credit card from buying school supplies, but tonight I got a call from my credit card company asking if I made a transaction of $190..... 10 times more than what it was....

does that kind of thing ever happen???
Additional Details
I know for sure it was the credit card company that called.... they knew everything already and I don't buy enough online to have anyone get my info....

I did tell them I didn't make the $190 transaction and they're gonna send me a dispute form to mail back in...

HI there,

This is a common error, which normally happens and many would have experienced a wrong charge towards their account.

When you notice an error, take the following specific steps to rectify the situation.
1. Immediately call your credit card company to notify them of the error. Talk with a representative and be sure to get the person's name. Request that your call be documented in your record.

2. Even if you notify your credit card company by telephone, the Fair Credit Billing Act states that you need to notify the company in writing. So write a letter describing the situation and send by registered mail.

3. The credit card company then has 90 days or two normal billing cycles, whichever is less, to determine if a mistake has been made on the charge. You will receive notification either that the charge was a mistake, or that the charge was correct.

4. If the charges were deemed correct and you wish to continue the dispute, contact the credit card company again in writing.

5. While a charge is in dispute, you are not required to pay it or any interest until the dispute is resolved.

6. You always have the option of contacting the person or organization that initially charged your card. If you can speak with a person who is familiar with your transaction, you may be able to resolve the dispute yourself in a timely way. In this case, instruct the individual to notify your credit card company that the charge was in error.

All the best.............

Regards

Contest the charge, they have to investigate and get the original recipe to the transaction.

Someone got a hold of your card number. Make sure it is the credit card company and call them back. Could be a scam and they are trying to get the info out of you. Tell them that you got a call about a transaction being made and you are calling to verify that call. If it's not a scam, tell them that you didn't make a purchase of $190 but you made one for $19. Most likely, the place where you bought the school supplies charged your account $190. It happens all the time. You have to watch. Make sure you have your receipt for the $19. That's your proof.

mycd212
ahh well, what i think happened was the people who you bought stuff from rung up the total with an extra 0, ring them up and sort it out maybe?

Katt
This happens occasionally; human error for the most part.

If you have the receipt, then you can easily use it as proof of your actual purchase. Call your credit card company and the store in which it happened. Both should have records and can help you sort it out.

Samm :)
added an 0 on accident? call them and clarify it

Yes, it does happen, all the time. Someone added a 0 to the first amount, and possibly put that 'extra' into their own pocket. You need to put your account on a 'hold' and show the credit card company both the receipt for the goods you actually bought, and your credit card receipt. If they don't immediately 'correct' this mistake, appeal immediately and even 'raise a fuss' until the company investigates to find out who made this 'mistake' and why!

Lydia
Hmm.

It might be a store error from where you bought your school supplies. Look at your reciept and see what it says. If it is, it's unauthorized transaction and needs to be fixed. The credit card company and the store will work it out with you- so definitely check that reciept!

If the reciept says $19, then it may be that someone got your credit card number and charged it, again, without authorization.

Check into it.

stevexnelson
Yes. This happens all the time.

Contact your credit card and explain what happened.

Good luck.

Um...... a mistake, an unauthorized charge. Why didn't you ask them.
They are looking at your statement not us. YOu could have found out where this 190 came from, what time it was charged, where it was charged at... etc. Then disputed it if you didn't make that charge.. call them and get off the computer.

Yes! That's why I never use credit cards anymore. My parents convinced me to get one at 18. I only used it once at freaking Jack-In-The Box for a damned Oreo shake and my bill was 90 something dollars. Garhglahsdfkh!
