Is this some kind of joke?
phoned a garage to buy a new car, i needed to borrow £4000 to buy the car i wanted so asked them to sort me some finance out.
they said the finance company will phone me back soon.

when they called back, they asked all sorts of rediculous questions, they also said i would have to take out 2 payment protection insurances and a warranty from them.

they wouldnt tell me any apr or total ammount to be repaid, but i worked it out that for borrowing £4000 they wanted about £9000 paying back over 4 years.

of course i laughed and hung up... but what kind of company was this! do people actually pay that much?

No. No joke. In 2000, my daughter bought a car on finance. The car cost £4,500 and the total amount payable was just over £10,000. At the time, the car was her lifeline, so she took it. She paid it religiously and in 2006 the car then 'belonged' to her. Fingers crossed, until now, it has been heaven sent. It has been a brilliant car!

People do go for these sort of deals because they are desperate and don't have any other way to get what they need.
It's not the fault of the people who take these offers, it's the finance companies that impose the extortinate terms.

Garages get paid by the finance company. Quite a lot in your case. I work that out to be an equivalent of 22.5% compound interest per year (if you paid off the debt in a lump sum at the end of the term) or 60% APR!

Have a look at the site below for advice on loans.

welcome news
Welcome to the world of payment-protection-insurance mis-selling.

You should bear in mind, however, that if you do lose your income due to accident/ sickness or redundancy then you still have to keep up payments.

I suggest you look at http://www.portwood.co.uk/asuone.htm where you can find some sensible rates for protection insurance.

Companies like this take people for a ride all the time. They usually target those with low income or poor credit scores. Your car payment should not exceed 20% of your income. Be careful. Yes, people who are ignorant to the total amount due or simply have no other choice actually pay that much. Sad isn't it?

It's called the debt chain.
