It's official: U.S. is in recession, what are you going to do?
Monday's declaration by the panel of the National Bureau of Economic Research confirms what many private economists, lawmakers and members of the general public already have assumed and puts an official date on it: A U.S. recession began in December 2007.

Now that this news is official (like we didn't see it coming) what are you going to do to preserve your credit rating and what about saving money?

Same old thing....go to work, take care of the kids and hubby, pay bills on time, invest in my retirement and other savings, watch it dip low and hopefully it will come back out on top again. I know it's official, I have lost 50% of my initial investment into my mutual funds. There went the nest egg! LOL

Same thing I do every month Sgt. pay my credit cards off in full, pay everything else before it's due and put as much as I can into my savings account.

sunshinegirl
The same thing. I have already started saving money and living very cheap. I do not care what others say. I live cheap.
I do not use credit cards and keep living within my mean.

I have not owned a credit card for 5 years. My car is paid for. I am building my savings with the money I would have made a car payment with.

Same thing I've been doing the past few months: Throwing every extra dollar I have toward paying off my credit cards.

Not a darn thing. I'm still young and not looking to retire any time soon. For us in our 20-30's, now is a good time to sit back and see what the older people are doing with their long-gone retirement money. In 2040, we may find ourselves in the same situation.

If there's one thing my Grandma taught me was to not freak out when the market dips. Just give it time and it'll go back up again.

I am going to be placing my entire paycheck toward the credit cards I owe the least amount of money and then retiring each card as they are paid in full. I am also limiting X-mas gifts to children only!!
I am also stock piling several thousand dollars in small bills 10's & 20's in the safe in my house and have already removed all but $20.00 in my savings accounts because if banks close like in the depression your money will be frozen and you WILL NOT be able to get it out for survival.
I have also taken all my stocks and mutual funds for retirement and exchanged it for cash that is frozen at Fidelity Investments. I will turn it back over into the market once it recovers.( I can't afford to lose on the market right now).
I live inTexas and have noticed firearm sales has increased for home protection so stockpiling a few guns and ammo is a plus for my family.
I have also lit my entire home on the outside to keep vandals away. My husbands gas has already been taken from our driveway once.
I have to say that this is not a recession but on in the gray area of a depression. I live in an IKE affected area and see the loss in jobs, homes, cars, etc. and my feeling is that it is a matter of time before people start fighting for food and survivial...it is already happening here in the south.
The media only tells us a small portion of the story I am sure there is more to this than meets the eye. Long live freedom, prayer, and democracy!!! May our mighty nation rise again!!!

Not going to do much of anything different. I'm already in the process of early payoff of a Chapter 13, rebuilding after my home was destroyed by fire in September and my husband and I are both laid off from our jobs until January... just going to keep on doing what we have been and save a little where we can. At least we both do get unemployment and have no utility bills right now since utilities are included in the rent where we're at while our house is built... and the insurance company is paying the rent. NEVER GO WITHOUT REALLY GOOD HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE NO MATTER HOW HARD THE TIMES ARE!

joe c
i'm doing what i recommend to all my friends, using home equity to eliminate cc debt,i'm still able to get about a 6. rate from my primary lender which is 2.5 points below the rate of my second anyway.
so i'll combine my first and second ,with cc 's and go long enough on all of it to get through the current crisis.while lowering my monthly payments in the deal as a hedge against inflation.
