Yes it sounds like phishing to me.

Phishing = A type of scam with the intent of capturing personal information such as Social Security numbers, online banking user identification numbers, debit and credit card account numbers, and passwords.

And DO NOT send this company anything at all until you are sure that they are legitimate. I doubt they are.

It's possible that this is a genuine debt recovery company and that some charlatan has stolen your previous address details and used them to open store cards and run up a debt in your name. I'd start by looking at who moved in after you. A friend of mine had his identity stolen by the person who bought his house! You need to contact the alleged agency, but DO NOT send them anything like your birth certificate, but tell them they've got it all wrong - in writing. I would speak with Littlewoods and offer to help them take it up with the police.

Take it to the police station and ask them to check the company out, also, you never send the original document through the post or let it out of your possession.

if i wa you i would not send your birth certiificate off .. just put the letter in the bin

mazsheps
try to google the debt company and find out if they are a real company. you could also ask for details of the debt.
At 17 you shouldn't have been able to open an account with littlewoods either as you can't have debt when you are under 18.

To legally collect a debt, they have to ALREADY be able to properly identify you.

If they are asking you to identify yourself to them in order for them to collect your money it's a total scam.

Phishing :- Trying to get more information out of you often to use for illegal gains.

Do not send your birth certificate and for the time being do not do anything with this company. Phone up Littlewoods and ask them to see if you did have the account. If you said you were only 17 then you would not have been able to have an account as you have to be 18 to have a credit card account. If you give the name of the debt collection company I can find out if it is genuine.

If it all turns out to be genuine, you should send a cheque for £1.00 to them requesting to see the credit agreement they hold for you. If they can provide it, you most likely owe the money. If they cannot provide it you will not have to pay them anything.

Do nothing, even if you do owe the money ignore it. Debts die after 6 years but the companies sell the details to other companies in the hope they can get the money - if you phone then it reopens the account and you have to wait another 6 years.

DO NOT send your birth certificate, only send a copy.
Ask for a copy of the bill that is outstanding.
Ask for account statements showing previous payments. Once you have this ask your bank for copies of the appropriate statements. If you made any payments they should correlate with your bank statements.

Also seek advice from Citizens Advice Bureau.
