No you can't use it as a credit..... as every transaction goes through your checking account...... wether it is debit or processed as a credit transaction.......
My understanding of your question, you are thinking that processing the transaction as a credit that it will work like a credit card account..... however this is NOT true..... any transactions that you make and I do mean ANY..... will be processed almost always immedatly through your checking account........... so my suggestion is wait till you have the money in your account before using the card..... if you don't have enough to cover the amount that you are trying to use your card for then it will come back as "DECLINED"
Say you have $22.50 in your checking account,,,,, and what you purchase comes to $31.75 no matter what way you do it as either "Debit" or "Credit (with your debit card)" it will come back as "DECLINED"
Think of it this way:

If they're on the same single card, you have to have the money available before you can use it as a debit or credit card. You would need a different card with a credit that is a separate buy now, pay later account. |

No you cannot. When you swipe your card somewhere using the credit feature, the vendor usually pings $1 against your account to ensure that you have money. Even if you had overdraft protection, the ping would return negative. |

It depends on the method you use, because different credit card scanning systems use varying rules. In general, even though your debit card can be used as credit, it doesn't really work like having an emergency credit card on hand.
For instance (this is directly from my bank, Wachovia, since I've been in your situation, with no gasoline to get home) if you go inside a gas station and try to prepay with your credit card - running it as credit - the system will try to call up your balance first, and there's a good possibiity you can't spend and your card will be rejected by that company.
But if you scan at the pump and run it as credit, the pump's scanner does not call up your balance - and you can spend.
So the answer is yes, but in limited situations. |
