If you are looking to rebuild your credit -
Pay on time. Create a history of paying on time.
Put money into a savings account at your bank.
After three to six months of not touching those funds (ask your bank about that time frame) , you might qualify for a secured card of low credit limit. Use it carefully and always pay promptly - and if possible, make your payments more than the minimum due. Your bank will increase your limit if you look financially responsible.

Don't keep applying for credit with the hope of getting more credit. Everytime you apply, it goes on record with the credit reporting agencies, and brings down your total credit score 5 points for each time it happens. This stays on your credit history for one year even if you don't take out other credit.

The debt collectors can report their history with you for 7 years - good or bad.
It's always a good idea to know when certain items will "fall off" your record, or to be aware of accounts that are not yours, or are items you would dispute. Disputing an item with the credit reporting agencies is free of charge.Account showing open that is closed and paid off? Dispute it.(In your case the debt collector can report the collection activity, but it should be listed as paid off, with a zero balance.) Account that is not yours? Dispute it.

Know your credit history - you would be quite suprised to learn how often the reporting agencies are wrong.....!

Do Google search for "Pre-paid" credit cards. They help you rebuild your credit and you're owing anyone, as its your money on the card.

These things tend to linger around for a bit.
A pre-paid credit card may be ideal for your situation.

bad credit stays in you file for 5 years, the more credit you get the more points you get - wheres the sense in that?- if your not on the voters roll you loose points.

check your credit rating and profile through experian, also some companies do take into consideration your income previous addresses and unemployment.(if unemployed) the default on your phone should`nt really effect it. but its worth checking your credit file. you can send money to experian and they will send it to you

best of luck

Once it passes to a debt collection agency your credit rating gets zapped it might be worth getting a copy of your credit rating to find out if it is definitely that, that is what has caused it.
