Blondie | MASSIVE CREDIT CARD DEBT? |
I need some advice on which credit counseling agencies are the best and the most legite. I am ready to take action on getting credit counseling and getting help with my spending addiction! I live in Ohio and I need some help. Additional Details There will always be people quick to judge and the only person that judges me is God. I have been humbled by my spending by not only losing my job, my home, and my dignity, but I also realized I was spending to cope with the depression of my divorce. I am not looking for anyone to pay my bills, because trust me, I know many people that are that way. I realize that I will be the one paying back every single penny; but being as though my debt is double of what I bring in; I can't afford to pay each separate credit card at the interest and the amount per month. I am just asking for advice what CC services are legite. I have too much pride to file for brankruptcy. I caused this mess, I will get out of it; that's where you people that are just surfing on Yahoo Answers comes into place. Obvioulsy you wouldn't be on this site if you didn't want to voice your opinion. So be honest. I'm a tough cookie, I can take it. I am proud enough to admit I need help, so help me. |

I found a large list of Ohio credit card resources. http://www.howtofindcreditcard.com/Ohio-Credit-Cards.html Try calling a nearby service and they can answer your questions. |

I went through Dave Ramsy's financial peace university. First of all, you can set your own payment plan and negotiate with the lenders. His plan suggests a 'debt payoff snowball'. Paying the most on the card with the smallest balance, and when that is payed off pay that amount on the next debt, and work your own way out of debt. Most companies will work with you, he has forms in his FPU book that you can use to write to the credit car companies. Or talk with one of their counselors. check out his site. best of luck. Oh, and most important, get everything in writing.
(he really does not recommend credit consolidation or bankruptcy) |

I have always heard that those services do not pay your bills.
Yesterday I saw a lady on here that said she paid 3,000 to Care One debt consolidation and they havent paid any bill in 3 months, and the cc companies are calling her harrassing her. She is getting a lawyer.
You can do this on your own. |

contact the credit card comany first. see if there is anything that can offer you, such as a payment arrangement with a lower interest |

You have some good suggestions here. Be wary of some of these debt negotiators. What you do is send them some money. They don't pay your bills for you. They'll take a certain percentage for themselves (processing fee) and put the rest into a 'settlement account' When things get real, real BAD, they'll negotiate with the company and try to settle for a few cents on the dollar. Your credit will be destroyed by then.
You can do a lot of this stuff yourself for free. Talk to your creditors and negotiate a lower interest (if possible). Some say pay the smallest balance first, the work up from there. That's one way. Another is to pay off the highest interest debt first, then work down the interest ladder. Paying the highest interest first reduces interest costs that can be used for the next debt. Your debt profile will guide you.
Spending addiction needs counseling.
If you have $5,000 credit card at 25%, you're paying about $104 in monthly interest. If you can negotiate the interest down to 15%, you cut your interest to $62 per month. That extra $42 can go to the principal.
You need to pay more than the minimum payment otherwise the balance will increase.
It sounds like you're unemployed? That picture has to change. Is the possibility of a second job under consideration. Even a minimum wage second job will do wonders.

CCCS a government sponsored no charge agency, should be an 800 number for your area. and yes they can help. We all hit rough times in life and yes we all make mistakes, best thing about mistakes is if we learn from them and go on. So am proud that you admit that it was your fault instead of blaming someone else takes allot of guts, and shows responsibility. Give them a call and hang in there, you will get through this and will get it resolved. I wish you the best of luck do not give up I have been in dire straights and have risen above, if I can, so can you. Do not give up |

What is your debt to income ratio? Do you owe more than you make per year? What you should do is stop shopping and take your credit cards and cut them up or freeze them. Look in the phone book for credit counseling in YOUR area. Ohio is big enough that we may give you a number that isn't close to you.
Couselling services do NOT pay your bills, they teach you to manage your money. Debt consolidation may be an option if you make more per year than your debt is. Otherwise, spent the money and face the embarrassement and hire a lawyer and file bankcruptcy. It WILL cure you of the spending. However, I feel that you are just trying to keep up with everyone else and you live on the cards to keep you happy and popular and stylish. And, that's when therapy comes in. You need to treat your depression and need to fit in and then the spending will stop. You can only depend on you. And when you let yourself down, the only one to blame is you. |

Credit counceling agencies aren't worth the time of day. Try Dave Ramsey's "Total Money Makeover", and probably the "Tightwad Gazette". I'll probably get thumbs downs for posting a link, but you might like the message boards at http://www.frugalvillage.com/forums It's a frugal living web site and a lot of people are in the same boat, and I practically live on there. Thank goodness there's finally someone on here willing to take some responsibuility for their debts! WTG! |

You may want to consider a debt negotiation program. Are you current or behind? You will just have to do your research.

Sounds like you need psychological counseling as much as financial counseling. Spending is an addiction like any other. |

I recommend debt settlement . Total Debt Solutions partners with a company in California called New Life to offer debt settlement. New Life has been in business for years and is listed with the BBB. My dad used them with great results getting debt free in 36 months. He held the money in a trust account; this isn't just sending money to some faraway company each month and saying a prayer that you dont get ripped off. Check out the source website and their free evaluation form or toll free number; they can help!
