Math problem-help me solve?
An employee worked 40 hours at his regular rate of $5.00 per hour. He also worked 5 hours of overtime at a rate equal to 1-1/2 times his regular rate. How much did he earn this week? ?

Let's take it one part at a time.

If he worked 40 hours, and he gets $5 per hour, then he received 40X5= $200 dollars for those 40 hours.

FOr overtime, he is paid 1 1/2 times his regular pay. How much is that? We just multiply 5 by 1 1/2 and we get $7.5. If he worked 5 hours for $7.5 an hour, then he received 5X7.5= $37.5 for those 5 hours.

In total, he earned $237.50.

Why can't you just reason this out? Good Grief. There are two parts to this thing, the regular pay for 40 hours and the overtime for 5 hours. Just work out each part and add them together. This is not so difficult and you should almost be able to do this in your head.

melted cheese
40 hours, at $5 per hr. so $200 from the original.

now for overtime, 5 x 1.5 = $7.5 per hour overtime.
and 5 x 7.5 = $37.50

add the two together and you get $237.50 this week

Your textbook must be old! Minimum wage is $5.15 an hour!

At any rate, you need to figure out his pay at the regular rate, which is easy: 40 times $5.

Then you need to figure out the overtime pay rate, which is $5 x 1.5 = $7.50 per hour. Multiply that time the hours worked overtime: $7.50 x 5.

Now add the total regular pay to the total overtime pay and you have the answer to your question.

40 x 5 = 200
5 x (5 x 1.5) = 5 x 7.5 = 37.5
200 + 37.5 = 237.5

$237.50

5 hours x 1.5=7.5
40 hours + 7.5 = 47.5
47.5 hours x $5.00= $237.50

Regular Pay is 40*5 = 200 dollars

Overtime is 5 hours at 1 and 1/2 times 5 dollars per hour, which is 7.50 dollars per hour.

OT Pay is 5 * 7.5 = 37.50 dollars

Total is then 237.50 dollars.

40 hr * $5 = $200
5 hr * $5 = $25
5 hr * $2.50 = $12.50
total = $237.50
