Mom lost my Social Security card?
I live in California and someone stole her purse and I'm guessing I need a new one since I know people can file for credit cards and what not under my name.
Now I'm underage and I don't want to turn 18 with effed up credit already. How should I file for a new one? What do I need to do? And how do I know if someone is already using my name? Does my Mom need to come with me to get these papers or whatever? She doesn't really seem to want to help. Any other help would be greatly appreciated :D

You need to call your local Social Security office& report the theft and they will have you fill out a form for a replacement card. You'll need to bring your birth cerificate. Ask them if your mother needs to accompany you. Also ask them if you should report this theft to the 3 major credit reporting agencies, they should be able to help you with that also.

i would have her go with you to the social security office, or call them first. They can give you forms to fill out.
good luck

Go to your nearest Social Security Office and tell them what you said here. I've lost mine a couple of times and have gotten duplicates.

live.laugh.love.
yep this has happened to me. you will need to go to your local social security office and get a new card. your mom might need to go with just to help. umm lets see. i know you need an ID whether that is school ID or license. you should ask the social security or your bank what to do about your number so you do not get your identity stolen!

Your Face
this site will tell you what to do
http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=329

this is really important so do it asap.

maybe ask another family member to go with you.

You can replace your Social Security card 9 times, for a total of 10 cards in your lifetime.

You will have to find a social security office and go there personally. They usually ask for at least two forms of identification-I replaced mine using my work ID and birth certificate, but there is a long list of documents like passports, drivers license, etc. that you can use. When you go to the social security office, you will need to inform them that your card was stolen, and they will take you through what you need to do to protect your identity.

I don't believe that your mom has to be present for all of this, but I'm not sure.

you can call social security, write them or get a new one online at their website.

You can go to the local social security office by yourself as long as you have your birth certificate and another form of ID. While at the SSA office ask them for the number they have if someone suspects their Identity has been jeopardized.

Sarah D - You can not just go in and get your SS number changed! It's a very drawn out process and not done for Identity theft or lost cards.

You need to contact the social security administration as soon as possible for detail information. What id forms that need to prove about yourself. I am sure your mother need to come with you to the office to fill out paperforms. When you have a replacement card, you can do some change online later such as update new address information...

Good luck! First has all information, prepare, and come as early as possible when the SS Administration office opens to reduce the waiting time of your Mom.

go to your local social security office take your birth cert and your mother b/c your under 18 and fill out the necessary paper work to replace your lost card. It's easy.

Well, I don't have all the answers you'll likely need, but the first think you and/or your mom should do is report that your SS# was stolen and they can put a flag on your # so nobody will be able to open credit under that number until you are of age. Good luck!

Added: You'll also want to replace your lost card.

yessy
my sister in law lost her babys social once and she said she had to get a new one at the social security administration and that supposely they give you the same one im not sure but try goin to your local office :D good luck

Go to the web site listed below and it says the following;

You can replace your card for free if it is lost or stolen.

To replace a lost Social Security card:

Complete an Application For A Social Security Card (Form SS-5); and
Show us documents proving your identity.
Show us documents proving your U.S. citizenship if our records do not already contain that information.
Show us documents proving your current, lawful, work-authorized status if you are not a U.S. citizen.
In most cases, you can mail or take your application and original documents to your local Social Security office. If you live in the New York City metropolitan area, Las Vegas NV, Orlando FL, or Phoenix AZ you may need to apply in person at your local Social Security Card Center.

All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents.

For more information about getting a replacement card and the documents you will need to show us, see Documents You Need for a Social Security Card.

You are limited to three replacement cards in a year and 10 during your lifetime. Legal name changes and other exceptions do not count toward these limits. For example, changes in noncitizen status that require card updates may not count toward these limits. Also, you may not be affected by these limits if you can prove you need the card to prevent a significant hardship.

In most cases, the only time you will need to produce your card is when you apply for employment. Therefore, if you anticipate starting new employment, you should request a replacement card in advance.

Keep your Social Security card in a safe place with your other important papers. Do not carry it with you.

Even though you apply for a replacement card, Social Security takes no action on the loss of the original card. Reporting a lost or stolen card to us will not prevent its misuse.

A person using your card or number can get other personal information about you and apply for credit in your name. So, if you suspect someone is using your number, you should take these steps to protect yourself and your financial health:

Educate yourself about identity theft;
File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission;
Check your Social Security record (call toll-free 1-800-772-1213 ; TTY 1-800-325-0778 ) to ensure your income is calculated correctly; and
Monitor your credit reports.

Your might need you to file paperwork with the department of social security letting them know it was stolen. I would suggest getting your SSN changed. I don't think you're mom needs to come, so long as you have all the proper ID.

Dindi
If you lose your social security card you should go to your nearest social security office and report it stolen. You do not file for a new card. You are given one social security card and that is for life.
