Money help, we are so much in debt and don't know how to get out!?
I don't know how to get back on track. We aren't making as much money as we were a year ago. Our credit is going down the tubes. Literally! Our credit scores were in the high 600's and are now at 500. We are having a real hard time being able to make our vehicle payments, are 45 days late. We are late on our rent, electric, phone. Etc. We just can't seem to get caught up. But we do seem to go deeper into our hole. Please help us by giving some kind of advice..! Christmas is coming up and we don't even have enough money to buy our kids gifts. I don't know what to do.
Desperate!

I did get a 2nd job delivering papers in the morning. I did cut up our credit cards. We have had our car for over 2 years, our income has just gone down. We do buy store brand, and we don't eat out. In fact, my mother-in-law is helping us buy diapers. We weren't living above our means. We just can't afford our bills anymore with the economy turning upside down.
We aren't bad people. And the car place won't help us out because of the time frame. Or they make up stories each month on not being able to extend our payment.

I have been in a similar situation and at the time all I could do was panic and be anxious. Until some one told me that being in that state just brings on more of the same. The more you are worried, the more situations will happen to make you worry more. Times are tough but you need to get into a state of mind of finding solutions not of worrying.
What I did was think about the worst that could happen. That for me was, loosing my house and having to start again. That wasn't so bad when I thought about it. I still would have my family, my kids all all the support from friends. That's what mattered. Also the economy works in cycles. Just like winter is always preceded by spring. And I knew that one day spring would come again and I could make my money back if I invested at the right time. ( you always plant in spring and reap the harvest in summer ) So with my new state of being, I started acting in different ways. I talked to my lender who worked out a different debt deal with me that would keep me alive for another 3 years, My wife found an opportunity to work 3 hours a night for 2 nights a week that put us in a better paying debt position. We worked on our budget and how we spent our money, and all sorts of positive solutions. ( By the way when I was in a nervous mode, no one would help us out but when I turned into positive mode, everyone would help us. Its like the vibe you send will either attract people or repel them ) Now we are free from all our problems and moving forward. The key was to be in a confident state of mind to finding solutions not in a state of mind of worry and panic. Its hard but it can be done. The economy is not going to get better soon so your situation has to survive untill it does. Believe me it will get better at some stage, it always does, just figure out how to hang on untill then.

have you tried a debt consolidation program? Our electric company (PG&E) offers a 20% off each month (automatically taken off) depending on your income, you should call your local electric company and see if they have something of that sort. Don't use your dryer, or your oven to save on electric bill. You've probably already done all the "cutting down" things but if you haven't, do it! it'll all add up to extra money to help pay those bills. Some credit card companies will place a suspend payment on your account for 3 months (some more) where you don't have to make payment until that amount of time they give, and it won't affect your score or give you a late payment etc. It'll just freeze.. but that just depends on your CC company(s).

Sell your vehicle and get something where you don't have to make payments. We had to down size to pay our bills. but in the long run, it'll be worth it!

Sell stuff you dont use on ebay.com or craigslist.com! buy stuff on craigslist.com instead of in the stores! there's a free section!

Good luck! you'll get out eventually. just have patience and be there for each other! you're in it together! :P

I know things are hard right now and unlike most people, I'm not judging you at all. I can totally relate.

Perhaps you may want to consider the following if they apply to your situation:

1. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
1-800-221-5689 ; www.fns.usda.gov/fsp
Despite what people may think about this, it's all about making sure your family has the basic needs covered. Your entire family maybe eligible depending on the total income of your household. Don't be discouraged or embarrassed.

2. Electric/Utilities:
Most Electric/Utilities companies provide assistance if you or someone in your household is temporarily disabled OR suffer some other verifiable illness.

3. Cell Phone: Get rid of it. Try a prepaid phone like: Tracfone or any number of others sold at Walmart. Even the Dollar stores now sell them. Virgin Mobile brand does not charge for roaming and calls in all 50 states are free.

4. Christmas Toys: Contact your kids school regarding this. My daughter's school sent home a form to all parents, which asked if anyone might be in need of Christmas toys who is otherwise unable to afford them. Our elementary school in partnership with a local non profit help economically disadvantaged families.

5. Church: If you belong to a church or reach out to someone in your family or neighbor to seek spiritual guidance at this time in your life. I love helping people as I am a believer in Christ Jesus. Know that life will get better and please communicate this with your husband as well. Let him know that you both can and will get through this rough patch together victoriously no matter what.

Trust God Will Bless You and Yours.

You are not the only one going through this. It is going to get very bad for the entire economy. I am sorry to say. Start with your smallest bill and work at paying that off first and then so on. Next make half of a car payment ever other week. Apply the first half to the principal of the loan and the second payment to the loan itself it will cut off interest you owe and you will get the car paid off quicker. The banks and car companies will tell you they won't accept it but they have to. You owe the money and you don't know from check to check if you will have it. MAKE SURE YOU APPLY THE FIRST HALF TO THE PRINCIPAL THE SECOND TO THE PAYMENT ITSELF. I hope this helps.

Sorry you are going through such a hard time.

If you are paying out more each month than you are earning, you are going to have to make some serious changes. If you're making payments on the vehicles, then I assume they're fairly new. Sell one (or both) and buy an older car that you won't have to make payments on. Or can you just sell one altogether and keep just one car? Can you move to a cheaper apartment? Can you cancel your cable (assuming you have it)? Cancel any other services, like cell phones? You need to find whatever ways you can to cut back on how much money you have to pay out each month.

Once that is done, you'll need to find a way to work with the companies that you owe money to, to find a feasible way to pay them back and restore your credit.

Good luck.

Contact your local Red Cross for a referral to the local Consumer Credit Counseling Services (CCCS) in your area. They can negotiate much lower payments and interest rates. They DO NOT negotiate settlements.

They will require you to stop using all credit and to cut up your cards. Your credit report will be updated to "enrolled in debt management." This does not damage your credit, but it may make it impossible to obtain new credit while you are enrolled in their program....so don't use this service if you anticipate applying for a new apartment, car loan or mortgage anytime soon, as you would probably be denied while you're enrolled in the CCCS debt management program.... Otherwise, it can be a very good way to deal with your debt.

Please note that CCCS cannot perform miracles in situations where there is an overwhelming level of debt relative to your income/assets.

CCCS is technically a non-profit organization, it is also partially supported/promoted by the credit card industry. My only concern with CCCS is that they would discourage a person from filing for Chapter 7 when in reality that would be in that person’s best interest. Sometimes Chapter 7 bankruptcy is the only solution to overwhelming debt.

Don't let anyone smear or guilt-trip you for making this decision if you have to...especially all the people who like to quote Dave Ramsey who think that BK should always be avoided....this is ridiculous advise that only benefits credit card companies...Of course BK should be avoided if at all possible...but sometimes it is needed. Do what's best for you and your family. Corporate America uses BK all the time and no one slams them.

Just remember that you can only file for Chapter 7 once every eight years....so if you file, you won't be able to discharge your debts again for eight years, even if you find yourself in a worse financial situation..

DO NOT use any firm that promises to settle your debt at 50%...these firms deliberately let your accounts default/charge-off to put them into a position to negotiate settlements...This ruins your credit rating and your creditors have no obligation to accept settlements from these firms.

Seek financial advice from a credit expert and consider consolidating your bills.
As for christmas, I have a wonderful idea that I did a few years back and it turned out to be the most memorable christmas ever. We were going through a financial crisis and had no money for gifts either. I declared it a "homemade" christmas. No purchased items. Each member of the family had to be creative and make their gifts. I sewed the kids teddybears with patches on them. (I don't sew normally, I just taught myself by getting used patterns at Value Village). I made a patchwork quilt for my sister. Again, looking up easy instructions online. I used an old wool blanket instead of batting and basted the fabric patchwork pieces onto it. I handmade greeting/birthday cards for my parents and inlaws. They could use these all year and remember us. I got the heavy duty paper from a local printing shop (discarded pieces). My son drew a beautiful picture for me and made a teddy bear for his sister. We made: handmade calendars, wrote poetry, gave coupons for back rubs/massages, fridge magnets using memorable photos. We even baked batches of cookies, decorated them and gave them out as gift baskets to special people in our lives. Christmas morning was the most special time as each of us wanted to see the faces of the person who opened each gift that was made from the heart.
We are not naturally creative, it came out of necessity. It has been a few years and our financial situation is a bit better (I have several part time jobs) but I still remember that the adversity of that year brought us the best christmas ever. We learned to make our own happiness and find new strengths within us. I felt after that year, that we could conquer anything. Don't lose faith, you asked for help and I think you will get lots of replies and ideas and I believe you will make a good go of it. The hard times will pass and hopefully make you stronger. Merry Christmas.

well first get to the root where all your money is going now. are you buying to many drinks at the 7-11 call the companies that obtain your car payments let them know your situation see if you can deffer a payment call the elec company see if you can pay half the bill now just to keep the power going and if you have cell phones cancel the phone company otherwise do the same. look on craigslist for gifts for the kids maybe you can find a couple bikes for them for free. get some side jobs doing something. remember your most important bill is your rent.

Bruce Williams the radio advice guy would tell you:

Get a 2nd job, and a 3rd if need be

and if you have no money, you shouldnt have a new car, trade in your cars with payments and buy a USED car

You are living above your means

Find the hole and plug it. You are spending to much.
Is there an issue that isn't mentioned, gambling, drugs, or alcohol?
Get another job, even a part time job 2 nights a week, BOTH of you. Might only be $100 a week each, but it will help you get on track from not going out to eat and having a few hundred extra each month to pay the bills with.
Stop spending money. If it isn't food you are going to cook at home or a new pair of shoes for the kids when they out grew the last pair it doesn't get bought, PERIOD. Not till you fix this.
For Christmas this year, explain to your kids how much you love them, and what Christmas is really about (Remember Whoville in the Grinch?) and do something which will form a great memory like help out at a soup kitchen on Christmas.
In case you were still thinking about it, stop eating out, stop buying coffees, etc.
Talk about money, know what you have what you need and where it is going. Write out a budget so you can plan your money.
