Thomas | More than one credit card? |
I'm 18 and I have a Student Select credit card with Bank of America. It has a $600 credit limit but I really want to get the Discover Gas card because it's 5% cash back on gas and 1% on all other purchases. Is it recommended that I can get this Discover Gas card because I travel alot to school and work... or should I just stick with my non-reward Bank of America card? |

Credit card offers aren't exactly a rare occurence. In fact, many people are bombarded by multiple credit card offers each and every day. The question is, how do you know which credit card offers are the good ones and which ones should be thrown in the trash (after being shredded of course)? Follow these seven bits of advice.
1. What Does "Pre-Qualified" Really Mean?
First things first -- when you get those credit card offers in the mail that say you're "pre-qualified," it does not mean that you've been approved for the credit card that is being offered. You still have to apply for the card (and have your credit history run) before you'll actually be approved.
Many people have gotten frustrated because they respond to a "pre-qualified" offer only to find out they're not really approved. Get all information about it at: http://www.credit-card-gallery.com/article/187,Credit_Card_Offers_Navigating_Through_The_Choices |

Compare the two; it is of course better to apply the Discover Gas card with its great rewards. However, you should find out the interest rate they charge if you can't pay the full amount when due. Most likely it charges higher interest rate. If you can manage to pay the full amount and not the minimum balance, go for it.
One thing you should always keep in mind, don't be a slave to your credit card. Manage your finance wisely. Remember you are building up your credit rating. Don't ruin it. |

There are better cards than the Discover Gas card. To find the credit card that will pay you the most for your spending profile (on gas, groceries, restaurants, etc.), check out this rewards calculator:
http://www.creditcardtuneup.com/
You can use the rewards calculator on College Student cards here:
http://www.creditcardtuneup.com/?card_type=College+Student
Note that the tool also finds the best combinations of cards for your spending pattern. |

I would look at the APR, it may have an introduction rate but read what the rate is after, if it's above 15%, I would forget it. You can go online and type in "credit card offers" and select gas credit cards and see if any interest you. Also see what other Bank of America cards offer, you may find another card that interests you. Be careful and look beyond the gimmicks and actually read the fine print and find a low APR card if you need another card, limit you yourself to 1 or 2 credit cards, the more you have the harder it is to keep you credit in order. |

Why not have both? The more lines of paid as agreed credit you have on your bureau the higher your score. |

I have two credit cards - you might as well get both as long as you are responsible and use them properly. |

I'd say stick with your student card for now only because you might not get a good credit limit with Discover if you don't have a long history of credit. I'd find out though. If you can, ditch the BOA card.
Tip: Don't let your credit debt pile up! Pay it off on time and don't buy what you can't afford! I've seen too many people ruin there post-college lives because of credit card debt. |
