I had some medical problems this spring that led to being late on a couple of credit card payments. I've had A+ credit for 20 years until the last 6 months. Now, I find I have been able to work things out with every creditor except this one card. They are completely unwilling work with me or negotiate anything. Since I was late twice in a 12 month period, my rate went from 11% to 33% and my minimum payment doubled.
Any ideas on how I can deal with this problem? Are these "debt reduction programs" on TV worth exploring? Any creative ideas?
Asking for charity is not in my character. Just defaulting is not in my character either, but it's getting closer to that because of the hard ball position the card company has taken. I need to do something in the next few days to get this monkey off my back. |

As difficult as it is keep trying and continue to do what you are doing you will get there! Have you asked to speak with a supervisor at the one company that is being difficult? Try telling them that if they can't take what you are offering them you are sorry but that is better than nothing, or you will file for bankruptcy. Keep trying to do it yourself other places have more hidden fees, it sounds like you are doing a great job so far. Good luck |

first mistake you made was even having any credit cards.. destroy them!!!
the only things you NEED are food, water and shelter (yes supposedly clothing but I assume you already have clothes)
eat cheaper - soup.. DO NOT eat out.. DO NOT order coffee "togo" that is a huge rip off.. the mark up on coffee and drinks is HUGE... you can make 30 days worth of your own coffee at home for what you pay for 1 coffee at "starbucks" or wherever...
cut off your cable, your internet, your cell phone...
I saved up enough money to BUY my own house while working PART TIME for Minimum Wage - it can be done!! |

If you've had spotless credit for years, then it is possible you can contact another creditor who might be willing, with the circumstances explained, to happily allow you to transfer your debt to their service. Some will do this with not only a lower rate, but they will also remove all interest rate charges the other creditor piled on.
It's definately worth a shot, and I'd personally recommend Discover, as they did this for me. |

First, destroy all of your cards but one, and don't use it.
Second, as fast as you can save $1,000dollars as your emergency fund. Use only for emergencies. Once this $1,000 is in place, destroy final card.
Third, arrange all of your debt on a sheet of paper from the smallest down to the largest. Don't worry about interest rates, just the balance.
Fourth, while keeping your minimum payments, do everything you can to get extra money into that smallest debt. Work extra hours, 2-3 jobs, don't stop until that smallest debt is knocked out.
Fifth, roll that money over into the next debt, and then the next and the next. Soon you'll be mailing checks for thousands of dollars, eliminating their hold over you. If an emergency comes up, use your $1,000 and replenish it as soon as possible before continuing.
Sixth, when all debts have been eliminated (usually after 1-3 exhausting years) keep working that hard to fill up you emergency fund to 6 months of expenses.
Then fund your retirement, invest, and have fun. At this point you can relax. And believe me, you will know that you have never truly relaxed in your life until this point.
Resolve to never, NEVER borrow money again. Buy what you can aford, save for what you can't. The economy is only going to get more and more unforgiving.

I would check out any credit counseling place well before giving them information.
Most of what they do, you can do.
If they are a for-profit place, say no and walk far away.
Non-profit counseling is better and less likely a scandal. |

Usually CC companies will negotiate with you..have u tried calling and asking for a supervisor or manager? Please dont go to any debt reduction program thats on tv...they're just gonna charge you more money for somethings you can do yourself. If this CC company isnt willing to work with you at all they probably wont with a debt reduction program either. If things are that bad maybe you should consider filing bankruptcy..but only if all else fails. This CC company sounds pretty vicious...do you own a home? Can you apply for a second mortgage? Maybe even applying for a lower rate CC and transfering the balance to the lower rate card so you could afford the payments.
I wish you all the best and God Bless. |

Just a response to a lot of responses with regards to asking for a sup or a manager with the credit card companies. I myself am a collections supervisor (please hold in the hisses and boos) and asking for a sup wont get you any further with negotiations. The majority of the time it is the computer that decides what you can get and the supervisor cannot over-ride this. Now you did mention some medical issues, these bills would qualify you for what companies call a "hardships" program. Generally what would happen is you call collections, they will verify who you are then you explain that due to some medical bills you've gotten behind on your bill and need some help. then ask if they have a program like that. The agent will ask a few questions just to ensure you do qualify and then transfer the acct over. The hardships dept generally is able to work with people a lot more, so that interest rate may drop quite a bit even if only for a couple months while you catch up. |

What is your financial situation? You can ask the creditor to settle for less. Acquire a new card with a lower APR and transfer the balance. Do not contact credit counseling services as they are not beneficial to anyone. Most Mortgage Lenders will not approve your loan if you are in CCC Do you own your own? If you have equity you could refinance to consolidate. I would only advise if you are able to get a decent rate. |

I wouldn't use the credit counselors who advertise. Call the better business bureau or the commerce department in your area and ask for references to reputable agencies. |

Call one of the cards that worked with you, call them and consolidate. If not, if your credit was excellent for 20 years, then there should be a credit card company that will allow you to transfer or consolidate. |

If your credit score hasn't dropped that much I would suggest stop dealing with the hard headed company that won't work with you. Take out a credit card where you can get 0% interest for a year. Make sure to make your payments on time after transfering the balance!!! Then you are just paying toward the principle and not paying interest. Do this as many times as needed until the debt is payed off. There is no reason for you to be paying 33% in interest, that is so rediculous, dont put up with it. I feel for you truley and hope this helps. The only other thing I can thing of is going to a finacial planner, a professional to help you get back on top of the game. |
