My bank placed a 1 day hold on my stimulas check, can they do that?

K.C.
Yes they can legally...however as someone else said certain checks you deposit for example payroll, governement, direct deposit of any kind such be made avaialble immediately!!!

If you recieved a physical check and you deposited it in the ATM---of course the ATM will not know what sort of check it is...so a one-day hold is pretty standard

Yes, they can. They do that in order to confirm that it is not a forgery and also when banks hold on to checks, they make a little interest on them themselves. That is how banks make some of their money. Be glad it is only for one day. Some out of town checks take a week to clear.

Yes, the bank can do that, however most banks understand that the check is from the US Government and they allow it to clear faster.

Yeah, they can place holds on any checks they want. Holds are often placed on large checks, especially if you don't have enough money in your account to cover the check. There is a lot of fraud going on, so if you brought in the paper check it is standard that they place a hold on it to ensure that they receive the funds.

It isn't fun, but it is the way banks work. They are trying to protect you and themselves from fake checks.

Yeah, they can.

You should have gone to the teller and asked them to make it available immediately.

Most of them have the power to do that. Especially with a stimulus check.

Yes, they can do that. When a hold is placed on a check it is done at the discretion of the branch. This happens when one has a fairly new account or one has overdrafted their account too many times.

Yes.

Yes they can, but if you have the funds in your account that will cover it, then you can use them. But that is the standard for some banks.
