Ask if you can see the statement so you can pay it off and check. Don't be disrespectful as he has helped you, you could always ask him to explain how it works.
if he took it out in cash then the interest is charged from day one.

£100 on £1000 for one month is excessive.

A hig amount would be 20%pa which is £200 per year or £17 per month.

The figures are a bit off somewhere.

Transfer this amount to a card offering minimum 12 months interest free credit. There would be a transfer charge charge of usually 3%- £30. but thereafter you have 12 months to repay without incurring any interest.

Credit is always expensive especially for the cash up front.
Also remember that even when you pay it back the bank will still charge for interest on the final month which you will have to pay.
Robbing lot aren't they!!! always coming up with another load of stunts to pull over the eyes of the many MUGS out there, best way to beat then is leave them to rot in their own festering pools of dirty tricks and cut up your card and curb your spends.
Never discard those bits of paper they send out with the bills cos' ten to one they have a new set of tricks that they hope you the MUG will overlook till its too late, things like an interductionary annual fee for not using the card £30.00
No two Cards are alike no two Banks are alike but MUGS are all the same born one EVERY minute on the dot.
Since I've retired and paid up all my cards I find I'm well off out of it by as much as £85.00 quid a month and thats just the interest I was paying.
Time was when you had a max 3 years to pay back if you curbed purchases, now some penalise you for not spending.
RIP THEM UP DO YOURSELVES A FAVOUR.

He can charge what he wants, You have nothing in writing.

Oh Boy!
I would bet the minimum payment is 100 while the interest charged is somewhat less than that but remember that he's GOT to make the minimum payment. That being the case, cough up the 100.

HI. Im not sure but it does sound a lot. You know what type of man his stepfather is, would he pull a fast one? Maybe you should ask to see the bill. If you need to be tactfull you could say you were worried about his future credit rating and want to check it with the bank for him to make sure he isnt paying that much interest in future?

Try never to borrow money. Especially off family. But you will pay it back, its not worth the years of family rifts. We lent my husbands son some money. He never paid it back and was too embarressed to come to our wedding. Shame.

If this is interest alone, on £1000 balance, that is too high. But surely he can prove one way or another with a statment?

£100 could be the amount he reasonably wants from you though - particularly if a) he has to meet the minimum repayment (reasonably 10%), or perhaps b) you got this out as cash - so there will be an additional fee.

It all depends on what you agreed with said stepdad. On the one hand, you are stuck with no agreement - as its down to what he says. On the other though, so is he, as its down to what you pay. I would take this opportunity to agree exactly what you will be liable for, and how this will be evidenced.

I would hope that as this is family nobody is trying to screw anyone?

Not wanting to sound preechy, but this sounds like a pretty dodgy arrangement - and when you are having to rely on this sort of arrangement to borrow money (which even on your own credit card is a bad idea) then you should expect a high interest rate!

Some cards have a cash advance fee in addition to the interest. That's usually a one-time charge.

NO!!! Do you realize that 100 interest per month on a 1000 loan is approximately 120% APR (you'd pay 1200 in interest in a year on the 1000 loan). A 10 % APR would be approximately 100/12 per month or about 9 per month.
