shops do not have to use "chip & pin"
however, they are not covered for credit card fraud if they do not, because of course its a lot harder to beat the pin number out of someone than try to forge their signature.
so, not being covered most of them wont accept it.
However, Tescos scan yourself tills dont even ask you for a pin or a signature, so you can use any credit card you find lying around. |

Just explain in the shop before you tip up at the till with goods, if they're jumpy about it just give them the customer services phone number of your card company, its usually on the back somewhere and ask them to get you verified as genuine with details like date of birth etc. That should smooth them over. |

I recently (9months) ago had an experience where I was sent a new card without my knowledge or request, the front door to my apartment building was left open and a horrible little tea leaf came in and raked through all the post! About a week later I had a call from the bank asking whether I had tried to buy a Dolce & Gabbana romper suit!
Much as I like dressing as a celebrity baby! I said no. It turns out all of the shops this thief went to accepted a signature and as the card was unsigned when sent out she had signed her own name (know it was a she from the places she shopped).
I think this may have cahnged but on the up side Oddbins still ask for a signature!!! so get drunk and forget about it! |

I think you will be very lucky if you get to use it.
There have been recent changes in the contracts between the retailer and the card company, the costs of any faud used to be covered by the card company so the retailer didn't lose out.
Now, if Chip and Pin is not used, the Retailer has to take the risk and i can't think of anybody willing to do that, for most big companies it is company policy to use only chip and pin.
I can only suggest you take along a lot of quality I.D. such as a passport and driving licence but i've been a store manager for years and if i didn't know you personally, i would turn you down even with the I.D.
Go and speak to the manager before you join the que, explain the problem and then it will stop any embarrassment at the till with 20 people listening in.
We have bounced cheques on a regular basis and trying to get the money is a really difficult job, even where we have I.D. etc. It's just so much chew even with getting the police involved which we ALWAYS do where we stuggle to recover the money.
The best option would be to borrow the money off a friend or parent, or you could just take them along to put it on their credit card so then you have a month to pay them back.
That way, they are not actually out of pocket before you pay them back. |

You have to ask each store where you shop. |

I would never use someone else's pin they picked for me. You pick your own. When you get your card. Call the number on the back, and electronically change it yourself. It should become effective right away. This will prevent anyone from aquiring your private information. Even the credit card companys are being scammed now. Be careful. You never know if there even legitimate anymore when corresponding. Make sure the people you converse with. Are infact the ones that hold the account of your card. You should be able to identify you and yourself by your three digit code on the back of your card. |

If you are using one of the larger supermarkets - where you are not known, before you start visit the Customer Care desk, usually the ' return of goods ', and explain your problem and if required produce a good means of identity, or, better still - A PREVIOUS STORE RECEIPT WHERE YOU HAVE USED THE CARD FOR PURCHASES. |

You don't need a pin number for a credit card. The only thing you would need a pin number for is cash advances. |
