My credit card company has charged me £12 late payment fee even although I sent the cheque in plenty of time.
When I called them to complain they claimed the payment had now been received but due to the christmas post and the days the bank was closed over the festive period that my payment had been delayed in being proccessed. Surely I should not have to pay the late payment fee when it was sent on time and it is not really my fault my cheque had got caught up in there system due to them being closed over christmas and new year period.

Don't pay the fee. You would not believe the amount of times I have gotten out of paying late payment fees. I am an expert.

Here are the companies who tried to get money from me:

Avon: Late payment fee: £70 How much did I pay £0
New Look £40- I paid £0
Dorothy Perkins £20- I paid £0
Black Horse £20 - I paid £0
HSBC - Probably £100, going in at £20 a pop- I am ashamed to say I did end up paying £20 by accident!!!

Yours is only £12 but why should you have to pay it when you didn't do anything wrong. Next time you send it by post call them and let them know.

This is always mine:

I have just got out of hospital after an operation and sent my cheque weeks ago. Why the hell have you charged me? Obviously I was not at home to correspond with you, I haven't opened post or answered calls for weeks.

How very dare you?! I sent my cheque on time, if you have a problem with dates then I suggest you cancel Christmas ( that was a joke).

Ask to speak to a manager, they know they have to let you get away with it then because it looks bad on them if they don't (although in your case it is through no falut of your own- mine is always my fault) If bad people like me can get way with it when it was my fault then why shouldn't good people like you get away with it whn it wasn't your fault?

There is always a date by which your cheque must arrive to allow the credit card company to cash it - normally this takes 4 working days from the day they receive it. You are expected to build this into your calculations for when you send the cheque off. So it is your fault if you didn't count 25th, 26th Dec and 1st Jan as bank holidays. Pay up this time and use a calendar next time. Or set up a direct debit so it can't happen again.

The cheque may not have cleared, it is your responsibility to make sure they get cleared payment on time.

Read the fine print. YOU are responsible to account for such delays and send the payment early enough to make the due date. BTW...paying over the internet has maybe a one day delay.

Ecko
Postage (unless recorded or registered) does not guarantee receipt although I'd try and get the charges waived they're normally pretty fair in my experience. Especially in view of the time of year.

And if that doesn't work, threaten to switch your balance to another provider. That might prompt them to do something

YOU'D THINK WHEN YOU CALLED THEM THEY WOULD OF TAKEN THE LATE FEE OFF YOUR BILL, TRY ANOTHER CALL AND MAYBE YOU'LL GET CREDIT FOR IT.

They usually say allow five working days etc. If you did, then it's not your fault and chase it up with Customer Services.

dream theatre
explain to them they will refund

make royal mail pay it.....there bloody usless

the Boss
Call them again and explain that you expect the charge to be reversed. Let them transfer you to the person who has authority to do that.

tell them you will cancel your card and move to another one if they dont refund you the 12 quid, they will soon respond!

gypsie_spiryt
Call them again and tell them again that it was not your fault. If the customer service rep cannot help you, ask to speak to their supervisor or manager. Unusally, they have more power to appease the customer. Also, be polite but not afraid to "threaten" to take your business elsewhere. Sometimes persistence is the key. I always use this tactic and usually it works.
