kieran m | My credit rating is awful.? |
My curent credit score is 511. I have been paying ALL my bills on time for 8 months now and have also cleared 2 defaults, but my score isnt improving. Ihave registered with experian and have been keeping a close eye on all my accounts. However my score isnt improving at all. i have made 2 applications for credit in the last 6 months and both have been accepted, 1 catalouge and a loan with welcome finance. I know welcomes % rate is high but im thinking of useing them to consoladate my open accounts down to 1. Is this a bad idea?? will it help my score bringing 5 acounts down to 1? |

A lot of good advice here and some not-so-good advice. The best advice your going to get is to learn how to repair your credit and to learn about personal financing.
If you really don't want to go through life paying the "stupid tax" then, yo u got to get smart about money. Life will be much better for you and your family. |

If you consolidate, do not close the other accounts, just don't use them. The higher percentage rate of open but unused credit you have, the better. Also, the longer your credit history the better. If you close the older accounts, your credit history will therefore be shorter. Also, 8 months is not long enough for any late payments, etc. to fall off your credit. Keep your diligence and it will pay off.
Good luck! |

Opening up new accounts is most likely combatting the positive things you are doing with your credit. Stop applying for new credit. You can and should leave the accounts open and allow them to age. As time goes, as long as you continue to make your payments on time, keep your balance to limit ratios low and keep new credit to a minimal level, your scores will improve significantly. Check out the credit blog below for more information on credit and credit scoring. |

You need credit repair. Usually companies charge hundreds of dollars to simply pull your credit and send correctly worded dispute letters—this is the key…..people will tell you that you can do this yourself for free but the truth of the matter is that the credit bureaus will throw your letters away or simply reject them. There is an easy to use online kit that will deliver the results you want available for just $19.95 at the source website. A similar kit is being sold via infomercials and radio talk shows for seventy dollars more but they try to solicit you repeatedly for other services after the fact. |

It takes more than a few months to improve your credit score. The defaults are probably still pulling it down even though they are paid. This is why keeping a clean credit record is so importatant. It takes years to build a good name but only a few months to ruin it. It is never a good idea to consolidate on a high interest rate loan. If you can take advantage of some of the offers you recieve for lower rate cards do that and consolidate on one of those. The catch is that you have to always pay on time - every time or your interest rate can soar. Usually the low introductory rate is for only a year or so - but by that time you can transfer the balance to another card with an low introductory rate. Just don't take on any new debt and pay this off as soon as you can. I've used this strategy and it has paid off well for me. |

Hi,
Paying one bill on time has got to be better than having half a dozen bills coming in and being late with one or even two of them.
If it is of any consolation to you I have a similar problem but in reverse.
I have no credit and therefore I have no credit rating so when I go into shops I get turned down because I am an unknown risk.
You cannot really win....lol

if you consolidate your accounts, do not close them. becuase the credit scoring formula takes old credit accounts into consideration.
make sure you pay the full amount and you dont exceed your credit accounts limits.
set automatic payments through your checking account.
Do not apply for more credit.
sometimes paying off old debt will re-age your debt and will harm your credit score, and I think this was yr case.
try to call the companies that your cleared the defaults with and ask them to remove the accounts from your credit report or post it as paid satisfactorily.
Good luck |

How many accounts you have open has nothing to do with your score for the most part.
Until those negative remarks drop off your report, which ussualy takes 7 years, your score is going to suffer. I would bet if you keep paying bills ontime, your score will be push 600 within a couple of years. But it will take alot longer to get that score up into the high score range... |

i might be wrong but i think it takes a few years before your score creeps up. you need a few years clear.
and what is that prick above laughing at. what a wonderful life he must have if he has never had a problem with debt. its an awful thing to have to worry about, when for whatever reason, you get into financial difficulty. i hope he feels richer with his 2 points. |
