kieran m | My credit rating is very very poor, I've been paying everything on time but its not improving? |
I noticed about 8 months ago that my credit score is very poor(511) so I took the nessary steps and got my 3 open accounts up to date I also cleared 2 defaults lately and took my store card below its balance. Ive been paying all my accounts on time since but my score hasn't even went up 1 point!!! The two defaults are for 1 supplyer and they are the only defaults I have. Can someone please explain why my score is not going up. The defaults are still showing on my experian report although they are in the process of taking them off, Will this help alot?? PLease help. |

It will help, but the biggest thing that will help is TIME. As more and more time has passed since your last bad episode (paying late, etc.) your score will increase gradually. It might be as much as 7 years before you have a perfect score again, but meanwhile, you'll see it improving gradually. Be patient. You're doing the right thing.
But, one thing worries me. You said you got your three OPEN accounts up to date. Does that mean that you have other closed accounts that are NOT up to date? If so, that's going to keep you in the low scores. Just because the account is closed doesn't mean you can stop paying. I hope you know that. |

A credit card with high interest rate is bleeding you white, and you find that there are other credit card offers with significantly lower interest rates. You simply want your credit card company to lower the interest rates, but how to approach them? Here is a 3 step proactive approach that will solve this problem.
Step 1: Get a clear picture of the interest rates you are currently paying
If you have only one credit card, it won't be difficult. But, having a pocket full of credit card will take a little effort on your part to tabulate corresponding interest rates. Mark the credit cards which cost you a lot in terms of APR and other fees. Also, note which one of your low interest rate credit cards allow balance transfers. Note down the contact information of every credit card you hold and move to the next step in the process. Defaults will hang around for about 7 years; Rebuilding around them will take time |

There are a few things you could do you could keep a regular check using a website like this one www.checkmyfile.com. Also you could write to Experian and explain that you are in the process of getting the bad credit removed. However if you were over limit or paying late on accounts you will have this recorded for a period of about 3 years. Having the defaults removed should help however.
The best way to prevent any further damage is to continue paying on time and if you can pay off the store card (you are probably being charged in the region of 29.9% APR which is huge!!). Try not to do any credit scoring for a period of 6 months which means if you can try not to apply for a new loan, credit card, store card, mortgage, Hire Purchase etc.
After that you should see an improvement. Unfortunately once you have bad credit it can take a while to repair the damage.
Another avenue you might want to pursue is to contact the national debt line where they can give you free advice, it's confidential and independent (according to their website) and it also has some useful tools on their for budgeting etc.

Good luck |

We are in the same boat. Just continue to ALWAYS be on time and try and pay down as much as you can afford. It matters what the difference is between what you owe on the card and the credit limit. I get frustrated too but all you can do is have patience. Once those things are taken off your score should go up. Good luck. |

I know that it is suppose to take 6 complete months of paying every single thing ON TIME before you can go up at all. if you miss one payment or its late then it cancels all the good work for that whole 6 months and you ahve to start again. |

Yes once the defaults are off your credit rating will go up, you are doing the right thing paying everything on time but it can take a while to get credit rating back up! |

What you need to do is make payments on time AND make payments well above the minimum payments. I've been chipping away at my credit card for the past 11 months and I only have 2 more months to go =) And my credit rating has gone through the roof =) My credit card company keep offering me a higher limit and I have to tell them "no" I don't want it. Just keep making payments and you'll soon get there. Be positive!!! |

Whenever defaults are on your credit report your score may suffer. Even if they are paid it can take a while before your score improved. My fiance had a score of 550 because of deafualts about 2 years ago.. but she has improved it to 630. So eventually it will come up. But until those negatives have dropped off your report, it will be a while until your can get your score way up there. |

I agree with the majority of the people on here, when it's said that time heals all wounds, especially when it comes to credit which is similar to Rome. Although it wasn't built in a day, it can get wiped out in ½ the time. In order to undo the damage that you did, those 3 accounts are going to have to be open for a while, at least 3 years. Now, for the 2 defaults, if they're going to be removed like you say they are, that will help. Also, although you may have 3 open accounts, what are the limits on those accounts? If you're maxed out, or close to it, that's not helping your score. You're safe if you use up to 30% of your total available credit. I would wait until those defaults are re-aged, and you've added more history to your existing 3 accounts before requesting a line increase.
Just be patient...Good things come to those who wait |
