Me | My credit score is 661. I applied for a credit card the other day...and I wasn't approved. why is this? |
I'm so confused. I don't owe money to anyone and my credit is not bad at all. Its not perfect but its not bad. So what am I doing wrong? |

Have you run your credit reports to see what might be causing them to say no? When you say your credit is not perfect, you need to know exactly what that means. Your credit reports will show you.
If you have been late on payments, or if you have ANY negative on your reports, this will result in a denial.
Use this gov't recommended, scam free site.
http://www.annualcreditreport.com
On the application, did your ID or drivers license address match the one you put down on the app? Or, are the names different? This can cause a denial. |

it may also be your income.. with most credit cards you need a set income.. maybe your income doesnt meet those standards? |

661 in today's market doesn't mean the same as it did a few years ago.
Too many lenders are scared to lend to people with lower than 700 because of the economy.
Try getting some sort of small loan or low-limit credit card (don't try for a store card) and make a charge and pay it off each month to establish a steady payment history that should help your credit go up.
Don't make too many inquiries though, as that can drop your score. |

With all the foreclosure, bankruptcies, and credit issues lately, most credit and lending institutions aren't a liberal as they used to be with new accounts. A credit score off 700+ is usually a safe bet and anything 750 and higher is a lock, but 661 is borderline and in this case it was low enough to not work for you. |

Your score is decent, but Prime Creditors like Chase and Wells Fargo my still decline you.
You may have some latenesses and defaults on your credit report you may be unaware of. Or a lot of inquiries bringing your score down.
You should have received a declination notice informing you why you weren't offered credit.
If they didn't provide you with an Adverse Action Notices, you could sue them. |

The feds are enacting laws making it harder for credit card companies to screw us over so they are implementing more stringent credit requirements.
In the 80s it was HARD to get credit, nearly impossible. You had to start with a bank loan, usually co-signed by someone with great credit before getting credit cards.
We are going back to that.
What type of credit card did you apply for? I found that store cards (like through Macy's, Sears, etc) were easier to get (and much higher interest) but after I got one and was responsible for a few months I was able to get a Visa. |

Which card did you apply for? There are different cards that require different levels of credit. You might have applied for a card that required excellent credit (750+). I would suggest you apply for a beginner's card. There's nothing wrong with these cards. I still use my first credit card and my score is well over 750. If you want to find an appropriate card for your credit level, goto http://www.FastNEasyCards.com . I can guarantee you that you won't be denied if you apply for the right card. Good luck! |

Get a copy of your credit report (you can get one free if you were denied credit - look at the letter from the cc company) and make sure that you aren't a victim of identity theft. Although you may think you don't owe money, someone else may have used your name to get credit then not paid.
You may also have a history of slow or late pay that doesn't factor into the FICO score but is the basis for the denial. Also, if you have any times in collections, even medical expenses that you dispute or have submitted to your insurer) these can cause you to be denied credit.
Finally, the cc company may have thought you already have too much credit outstanding for your stated income. If that's the case, take heed of their decision and don't rack up more credit. You may be setting yourself up for trouble down the road.
Check out the Fair Credit Reporting Act to find out your rights regarding your credit report. |

Your history plays a big part in credit. if you were denied, you are entitled to a free credit report from the reporting agency that caused the denial. Make sure you get this report and check the items listed. Perhaps someone doesn't have you showing as 661? |

Are you married? Does your significant other have bad credit? Have you changed jobs recently? Do you have a bad history with money? All of those could affect it, or you're just trying to get a card with a very high limit, try lowering your limit or going to your bank (financial institution) and see what they have to offer. |

it depend on wha credit card you applied for. There are credit cards that are for people with a certain credit score range(excellent, fair and poor). Or it could be you don't make enough money or have a job. That's all I can tell you. |

The reason for that is that they know that they can get more money off the people with a credit score under 600 in intreset and on money put on their cards for a score of over 700, they do not want anybody thats average or in the middle of the pact because the high risks and the perfect brats are the only real money makers. |

It's because you don't owe! Creditors want to see that you are responsible and can make payments. If you have no payment history, then you will have a hard time getting a credit card. You're going to have to get a "less than desireable" credit card, put money on it, and pay the bill. Give it a year before applying for a better credit card. |

It depends on a lot of factors. Debt to Income, How many inquiries have been made for obtaining credit, missed payments, maxed out credit, too much available credit, etc. Typically basic cards that dont offer rewards and have high interest rates are failry easy to obtain. With your credit score- which isnt great, but certainly not what I would consider bad or poor, without seeing your repoprt I venture a guess that you already have a few open revolving accounts and they may have hads a few slow pays in the past. That may have scared them away, or they simply could have made an error. Maybe youcan call and ask them the reasoning behind the denial. A good balance of installment to revolving is important, and dont close your oldest credit line..leave it open to show history. I look at a persons income, how long they have been there, their credit report, what type of credit they have. |

How many credit cards do you have? That is a factor as well if you have a lot they may be wary to give you one. |

Here's the thing... I know when we were going for our mortage they were looking at our "middle" score using Trans Union, Experian and Equifax. Our Trans Union is always much higher than the other two. I have read that to get the best credit card offers, you need to be 700 or better but I wasn't able to find it online anywhere. Credit cards are bad anyway and if you do get one don't keep a balance of more than 35% of the limit, this will lower your credit rating too... So if you have a 1000 limit (just an example) then you shouldn't keep a balance of more than 350... I'm done rambling :) |
