Amazing assortment of answers.
Generally, your father would sign the back of the check, then right under it "pay to the order of >your name<"
The problem is that there is an awful lot of check fraud, and many banks will not accept "3rd party checks" in this manner. It would depend on your bank. My credit union does it for me, but my bank won't.
So the answer to your question is....call your bank and find out what their procedure is. If you and your dad use the same bank there may not be a problem. |

If your dad signed the back, it is as good as cash, anyone can cash it. Its called endorsing a cheque. Make sure you don't lose it, becuase ANYONE can deposit it into their account.
if your dad didn't sign the back, get him to sign it. Just say...hey dad, you forgot to endorse this cheque...could you please sign it for me. |

Have you got a paying in book or you can pick up paying in slip at bank.. Just write the amount your dad has paid you with date and write your signature where stated, also put date on. Deposit cheque with slip. Your Dad could also write a cover note to the bank to explain it is a gift to you.Simple as that. |

he will have to cash it and give you the money or else go to the bank and have them deposit it into your account. Some banks allow that
Not all banks will honor 2 party checks |

He has to pay it in to his a/c and then give you the money because cheques are crossed as "account payee only" |
