If it was a joint account and your name is still on it than you are jointly responsible.

Bruce T
Yes they can. And they can also sue you and/or ruin your credit rating.

jazz_lover_25
Unfortunately, if both your names were on the account, then you are also responsible. If you were already separated or divorced when he wrote the bad check, I would go to the bank and speak to one of the managers to see what they recommend. Good luck!

Rosy
I believe for joint a/c u need 2 signatures. Did you sign it?.
If you didnt the bank cannot hold you responsible as the meaning of joint a/c is everything is done "Jointly".

Good luck

If they can not get him to pay or can't get a hold of him, then yes, they can chase you since you are also a legal holder of the bank account.

The only thing you may be left to do is to pay the debt and sue your ex for the money.

blueJean
was the account settled during the divorce? if you name is still on it, you might have a hard time getting out of it. what about your credit? never leave joint accounts unsettled.

Sjean
Yes. You were pretty dumb not to close the account when you broke up.

Chungath
If it is a either or survivor ( E or S ) account, then you have to take the responsibility of honouring the cheque. If it is a joint account and you have also jointly signed in it, then also you have the responsibility. In that case the only thing you can do is to move legally - later - to get his contribution to the settled amount. One last resort is that in the terms of your divorce legal document, if The responsibility of this account is mentioned in such a way tht you are relivieved from all the responsibilty of this account, then you can move legally..

If you two were sharing a bank account then yes, unfortunately you have to pay it. I know that bites the a-s-s, but that's the way it is. The same thing would happen to him if you'd written a bad check.

If its a Joint-Signatory account, then your ex should have taken your consent on it. However, if it was not Joint-Signatory, and required any of you to sign checks, then you will be responsible to pay for it as you have authorised him to use the account even without your knowledge.

Suggestively, convert your account to a Joint-Signatory account to know what your ex does with the account. However, even you would require his signatures for the checks you would write as well.
