My friend's 'boyfriend' applied for a credit card in her name. consequences of shopping to police?
He has gone up to 500pd limit, in four months since opened, gone over limit twice by a few pounds, missed one payment and late on another. How would this affect her credit record? Finally persuaded her to go to police.

It is fraud and identity theft in any country. Have the jerk arrested.

Contact the credit card company. She'll probably have to give them all the info on her hopefully now ex-boyfriend.

If she does not follow through on this and bails him out by letting it go, it is going to screw up her credit record.

It will ruin her credit score. This is the deal. If she gave him the information to get the card, there is nothing she can do but suffer the consequences of her mistake. If he stole her information or used it without her permission, he will go to jail for fraud and she should report him immediately to the police and press charges. Then promptly dump the loser.

Brian G
It should be currently showing on her credit report, bad stuff and all, hurting her credit score. If she does report it to the police, she should be able to prove she is a victim of identity theft and hopefully have it removed without much trouble. If she doesn't report it, she is stuck with it.

if you can prove that its not her fault, for example the CCTV on cash point should prove she did not do it... best advice get a new boyfriend... be happy

* If he applied for the card, via the internet say, without her knowledge, hid the statements/receipts from her & she was completely unaware of the situation then she shoulld seek legal advice immediately - its identity theft/fraud

* If she gave him the information, such as the pin etc and she was responsible for paying the monthly bills.....its her responsibilty

* If he knew the details maybe given to him at a previous date due to her thinking him as trustworthy) and stole the card off her to make purchases she may be able to claim fraud.

* If she has taken the card out under her name & then given it to him, all liabilty for payments etc is down to her

My advice would be to contact Citizens Advice

If it turns out not to be her fault, she will be able to get it removed from her credit record. If it was her fault, she will be stuck with it im afraid!

It will effect her credit record until the whole thing is cleared up and resolved. My recent experience has shown me that police and credit card companies are not very proactive in chasing up identity fraud, but it might help that she can name the culprit. Credit card companies just chase the person whose name is on the card. Good luck I hope you get it sorted out.

MICHY06
im not sure.... depends on if she knew about it or not?! how does she know all these details or has she discovered statements?
Surely she would have to prove she didn't open it by getting ex prosecuted...
