Howdyman | My husband filed bankruptcy before we got married, I need a new car..........can he cosign for me? |
I need a new car and I need a cosigner, come to find out, my husband filed for bankruptcy and he didn't even told me until now. The good news is he is about to get discharge, but I need a new car now. Should I leave him? |

Discharged? I had to file bankruptcy too and for 9 months afterward (at least where I live) you have to give part of your income to your trustee if you make over a certain amount, and then you are "discharged". But you would still have bad credit for 7 years. If the law works the same where you live, then he will have bad credit for 7 years after the date that he filed. After the 7 years, he gets to start from scratch again. Good luck, you'll need it! (Kind of seems like a bastard to keep something like that from you!) |

You shouldn't use your husband as a co-signer, especially if you are having thoughts of leaving him. If you do, you'll have a high interest rate or it will be one more thing to iron out in the divorce.
Often, you don't need a co-signer unless you don't have enough income or lack a positive credit history. Try asking a parent or sibling to co-sign for you. |

Why is leaving a man an option due to his credit score. Why can't you by your own car. You don't need a man...Maybe your standards are higher in what you are trying to get in a car and you need to lower them. |

The better question is should your husband leave YOU since you can't qualify for a car loan ON YOUR OWN merits.
Is he wrong for not disclosing a bankruptcy? Yes, perhaps, but this does not constitute a sound basis for a divorce UNLESS you only really married him for his money or what you THOUGHT his credit score could do for you. |

Being discharged doesn't necessarily mean he is free to cosign for any one. He can start over rebuilding his credit record. You would have to ask a lawyer or maybe by chance the car dealer would know. Why would you need a cosigner? Are you underage or bad credit. You should be able to get a car without a cosigner. Check with different dealers. One of them should be able to help you get a car without a cosigner. |

First, he probably should have told you that he filed. These days, there isn't such a stigma. But I digress...
Don't have him co-sign. Your interest rate with him co-signing will be high. Ask a parent or a close relative to if you really need a co-signer.
Should you leave him? No. This happened before you were married. |

he can't sign as he is in bankruptcy and the federal court doesn't take to well to that for a variety of reasons, there are several sub prime auto lenders out there but beware they have really high intrest rates, as far as the marriage goes if you want to leave him over this what kind of marriage do you really want? and what does this say to your charecter or his after all, and what ever happened to for better or worse? |

If you actually need a co-signer just to buy a car, then your credit isn't much better than his. |

That is NOT a good reason to leave your husband. You did not say that he lied to you about having filed for bankruptcy - he just didn't tell you that he filed for bankruptcy - there is a BIG difference.
Try applying for a car loan at Fireside Credit in California. I had at least 60 to 80 lenders turn me down for a car loan until a car dealer applied at Fireside Credit on my behalf. I GOT APPROVED - bad credit and all - and I'm driving a beautiful $60,000 fully loaded SUV, making the payments every month, and enjoying my car. |

He can't co-sign for anyone. What do you mean, should you leave him? After his bankruptcy is discharged he can start from scratch to start building his credit back up. It will take a while to do it, but in the meantime shop around for your car. There are a lot of places to buy cars and if you have decent credit you won't need a co-signer. |

Sure, leave him - after all, isn't a car the most important thing to you? |

You are joking. You would consider leaving your husband because you need a new car?! |
