You might want to set a rule that neither of you can spend money over a certain amount without discussion. Explain in simple terms how long it's going to pay off that credit card with interest. And that you won't have money for emergencies if you charge up the card with items you can't afford.
He may need some help like a financial management class. Suze Orman has some excellent books on the subject.
When your partner racks up that big a bill all of a sudden it bring one to wonder is he manic? Could he be manic depressive and making unwise decisions because of something like bipolar disease? Has he recently been through a tramatic even or is he in the military? This kind of behavior can also be related to PTSD (post tramatic stress disorder) and is common in returning military members who have been deployed.
I would suggest you tell him exactly how it makes you feel. I would compare something like that to financial betrayal. After all you can be unfaithful financially in a marriage. It's a partnership and he is acting like he is single. Your credit is tied to his, you are just as responsible financially in the eyes of the law as he is for the debt for those things and deserve a say in what kind of spending is done.

Sit him down and force him to look at your household expenses and income. Make a chart of all the bills with monthly payment and balance columns vs your income.
Make him write down everything he spends for a 2 week period so he can see on the stupid things he's wasting money on.
Then take his credit cards away from him. Put them in a ziplock bag of water and freeze it. Give him a weekly allowance of spending money and when it's gone that's it. |

If the card is in his name only, don't worry about it. Split all of your household bills(each of you pay half), and if he wants a credit card payment then that comes out of his own money. This should also include car payments(pay what you can afford for your own car). That's how my husband and I do it and we haven't fought about money since.
If the card is in both of your names, have him get one in his name only and transfer the balance.
I think trying to mother him will just piss him off. If he is the only one responsible for the payment, then he will learn. I would just present this to him and tell him that's how you want it and your not going to put up with it. It's that simple. |

is he an emotional spender? emotions play a big part in why we buy the things we do. and or how we spend money. or take the credit card from his wallet and pretend you have no idea what happened to it. he will then have to have the card cancelled. and any offer that comes in the mail trash it. |
