My husband just found out that his father has ruined his credit, $214,000.00 worth! What can be done?
he found out he has a house in his name, businesses, cars, utilities, starting when he was 10 years old!!!

I have very bad news.

For FRAUD at this level, your husband's ONLY viable option is to report STOLEN IDENTITY to the authorities and have his father charged.

It's bad enough that his father did this from age 10-18.

But when your husband turned 18, the father MUST fess up and clean up his HOT MESS.

Sometimes the child must raise the father.

But I want to be clear on this. Reporting the father should be done OUT OF LOVE, not out of REVENGE, not out of MALICE, not out of PAIN, not out of HURT, not out of SHAME.

Your husband has a right to a clean record and since his father has basically defecated on your husband's credit, it is important for you to MOVE AHEAD by treating the father NO DIFFERENT THAN ANY STRANGER.

That is how toxic AND CALCULATED this fraud was!

If the father must go to jail as a result, then so be it. Your husband should VISIT HIM help the father through redemption and restoration.

THIS is awful! First thing he needs to do is get all of that out of his name and have a notice placed on his credit report that reports identity theft, because that is exactly what this is.

He also needs to see where he stands legally, because the assets may be legally his to pay off some of these debts. There is good news though: any of the debts that are good will stay on his credit report forever. Bad debt will last 7 to 10 years. I know that is a long time, but it is better than a lifetime, and in 7 years or so, he can look at being out of this.

A good financial counselor can tell you where to go. A good idea would be to make an appointment to speak to your loan officer at the bank you bank at. Tell them what has happened, and they can send you to the proper people. Your bank may even have some people available to help you out at a discounted price, or free of charge.

This is a very had position to be in. Your father in law has caused this, and dealing with family can be extremely emotional. NOT to mention, other people in the family may get mad at either him or you guys. HOWEVER, your financial future does depend on your credit. You and your husband can have some problems with this if you don't correct it as soon as possible.

BEST OF LUCK.

He needs a lawyer. Your husband's father may (probably) will be going to jail for fraud. A credit card is one thing but a house is MAJOR fraud-- the deeds and loans are notorized so he had to have had some sort of fake ID to get away with it.

seekinganswers36
He can dispute all of this, by supplying the credit bureaus with a copy of his birth certificate, ss# and proof of residence, and have all of the information removed from his credit reports.
He needs to get the free copies of his credit reports and start the dispute.
It will take a little time, and effort or he can hire a company or a lawyer to do it for him.
He did not sign for any of these loans, so ultimately he can not be held responsible for repayment.

Good Luck!!!

omg, tell your husband to get a lawyer immediately, that is serious fraud.

He needs to clear his name. Confront his father and get into action fast.

How has your husband not killed his father???!?!?!! And how he has not found this out until this point???

SPIFIMAN1
This is major identity theft/bank fraud. Your husband needs to consult a lawyer A.S.A.P. and get the police involved. Your father-in-law should go to jail

I have heard of parents doing this type of fraud before, but NEVER to this extent!

If your husband can PROVE to the creditors that he was a minor at the time of the purchases, he can GET OUT OF IT, and also they will take your father to court. His father will probably be forced into bankruptcy and perhaps even put in jail !

Good luck!

Michael
Your husband needs to contact the police claiming his father has stolen his identity. He also needs to to hire an attorney to fight this and get these items removed from his credit report.

Since you are married this will affect your FICO score as well.

peachez
send his pops to jail other wise he will have to pay up

clgirl
all your husband has to do is prove that he was 10 years old at the time all he needs is a birth certificate
